Eastern Shore Power Rates Hiked 10.14 Percent

The Maryland PSC last week allowed Eastern Shore Public Service Company to raise electric rates by 10.14 percent, effective August 1, to yield about 5.19 percent on invested capital. Sen. Harry T. Phoebus, Somerset, protested and sought a 60 day extension, planning to appeal if denied. Joseph Allen, peoples counsel, defended the decision, noting a power pool does not harm consumers and that filings meet PSC standards.

Everngam's Denton Institution Carried On By Lewis And Nuttle

Everngam's, a Denton landmark since 1897, was bought in 1947 by L Tayloe Lewis and Harry J Nuttle. The store known for shoes clothing and quality brands sits on Market Street between Third and Fourth. Lewis, a Navy veteran and Blue Ridge College graduate, manages the firm with long serving staff including Emily Cannon and Elizabeth Greenley.

Caroline County 4-H Club Campfire set for July 30

The Caroline County 4-H Club Campfire will take place July 30 at 8:30 PM at Garland Lake near Denton. Bill Cooper of Ridgely leads the event with stunts and tricks, inviting 4-H members and families. refreshments provided by the Senior Council. Weather outlook: hot and humid with scattered showers then cooler later in the week.

Chesapeake Bay Bridge Opens July 30 45 Million Project

Maryland celebrates the Chesapeake Bay bridge opening as the third longest over-water span, with dedication at both ends led by Gov. McKeldin and former Gov. Lane. The 7.727 mile structure includes 4.35 miles over water and uses 118000 cubic yards of cement and 4.5 million rivets for the superstructure. Maintenance crews will repaint with aluminum paint to resist salt air. Three lanes are criticized but defended as cost efficient. 24 hour tow and support services will assist stranded motorists, along with snow plows and cleaners on duty.

Puncke Named Chairman of County Scout Drive

William Puncke of Federalsburg is named Caroline County Campaign Chairman for the Boy Scout Fundraising Drive. The annual Del-Mar-Va Finance Campaign kicks off in September across more than ninety communities on the peninsula. The goal is $121,000 to fund executive staff, camps, Court of Honor awards, leader training, and office operations. H. Bruce Ayars will serve as Campaign Director.

Officers Stage First District Raid Near Goldsboro

Sheriff Wm Sc Andrew Deputy I F Andrew Cpl Gus G Koste and Trooper E C Myers led a raid early Sunday at the home of James Dyer two miles north of Goldsboro. Dyer colored pleaded guilty to operating a disorderly house and selling alcohol and received six months in the Maryland House of Correction plus a 250 dollar fine and costs with the sentence suspended. Seven Maryland and Delaware vehicles were found on the premises as patrons fled to nearby woods.

Missing Nun Found After All Night Search

On July 17 Ridgely Fire Co and Denton Fire Company aided a search for Sister Baptista of St. Gertrude's Academy after the church hill carnival. State Police halted the raid at midnight and daylight resumed in a 100 acre corn field amid dense woods and biting insects.

Gideons To Lead Special Grace Church Service Sunday

The Gideons will conduct a special Sunday evening service at Grace Methodist Church on July 27. The organization places Bibles in hotel rooms and distributes scriptures to students and draftees. the meeting is interdenominational and all are welcome.

New Drive-In Theatre on Route 50 Opens This Summer

Construction progresses on a 19 acre Route 50 site for the Super 50 Drive-In Theatre expected to debut about August 1. Usilton Named County Mental Hygiene Chairman

Mr. Fred Usilton of Denton is named chair of the Caroline County Mental Hygiene Society, a local branch of the Maryland Mental Hygiene Society. Broiler Producers Urged to Contact County Agent

County Agent F M Rogers urged Caroline County broiler producers to contact his office to access the services of the new poultry Extension specialist at Salisbury. Dr Kenneth Laurent, from a Florida poultry farm and a graduate of the University of Florida and Cornell, will make farm calls to aid production and management. University and other stations show improved practices that increase profits. Laurent will help producers analyze production to improve bird quality and reduce costs.

Al Herman and Ed Luckey revive the 1927 established tune On The Good Old Eastern Shore for Del Mar Va peninsula readers as the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opens on July 30. They researched the region firsthand as young graduates from Baltimore and plan to share the song with locals this week, preserving regional pride.

Scout Steering Committee To Meet Monday

A meeting of the Steering Committee is scheduled for Monday evening, July 28, in Caroline High School, Denton. This may be the last gathering until September, when a charter for a regional Girl Scout Council is hoped to be presented. William Puncke Jr of Federalsburg has led the committee as chairman, with the group nearing the foundation for a new council. Earlier discussions covered the campsite needs amid rising membership.

Trailways Bus Schedules To Be Revised

Trailways will revise schedules for routes to and from Eastern Shore points and Baltimore and Washington on July 31 when the Bay bridge opens. Edgar T. Bennett of Trail Way's Red Star Division says new timetables are being distributed to terminals and agents. Patrons should call to confirm departure times for trips on or after July 31 as some routes gain up to 35 minutes, while peak traffic may add travel time.
