Ferguson Appointed To U of M Staff Post

Heavy Electrical Storms Strike Ridgely and County
Heavy electrical storms swept through Ridgely and surrounding rural areas Monday afternoon and evening. Hail up to walnut size shattered windows and damaged gardens while winds felled branches and some trees. A roof and TV aerial were damaged at John Saulsbury’s farm. A Hillsboro store suffered fire damage from lightning, with parts of the rear burned and meat refrigerators harmed. Vetoed Wheat Quotas Cut Soil Bank Payments Posed
University of Maryland economist George Stevens told Eastern Shore farmers at an Easton Soil Bank meeting that voting down marketing quotas in today’s national referendum could slash Wheat Soil Bank payments by more than a third. In most Maryland counties payments would fall from about 1.34 to 0.86 per bushel, with Garrett County showing 1.26 to 0.79 and Howard County 1.36 to 0.89. Stevens warned the cut would deter participation unless rates rise, tied to a drop to 50 percent of parity if quotas fail. quotas approval would leave 1957 wheat price at the same level as 1956.

Wheat Referendum Polling Places Scheduled in Caroline County
Polling places for the wheat marketing quota referendum are set for today. Voters in the Ast, 2nd, 3rd, 6th and 7th districts vote at the ASC office in Denton, while 4th, 5th and 8th districts vote at Caroline Supply Company in Preston. Eligible voters are growers with more than 15 acres of wheat in 1957. If two thirds vote yes, quotas stay for 1957 with price support 75 to 90 percent of parity. excess production faces a 4.596 parity penalty. If more than one third vote no, quotas lapse and price support is 50 percent of parity.
