Denton Maintains 60 Cents Per 100 Tax Rate

Denton’s town commissioners keep property tax at 60 cents per $100 for 1931 amid a roughly $1.5 million taxable base. Clerk Walter Spathlin and assistant Mrs. Newman Richards prepare the tax accounts due August 1. Debt has fallen from $51,000 to $31,000, with $20,000 bonded and $11,000 notes payable. The town prides itself on low rates and strong services on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

Tick Fever Warning Highlights County Health Advice

The report recalls Dr. Riley’s guidance on Rocky Mountain spotted fever linked to tick bites and contact with crushed ticks. It urges avoiding tick habitats, promptly removing ticks without crushing them, washing hands, clearing brush, and inspecting clothing after tick-infested activity. From 1929 to 1933 Maryland recorded rising cases and 19 deaths.

County farmers get bigger profits from 33c wheat payments

Maryland wheat growers will gain about 115000 in added benefits from raising payments on the 1935 crop from 29 to 33 cents a bushel. Caroline county share is estimated at 5327.81 dollars. First payments start at 20 cents per bushel with final payments after local costs are set.

Fire destroys Crumpton cannery with $75,000 loss

A fire at D. E. Foote & Co. cannery in Crumpton on the Kent County side of the Chester River destroyed the plant and part of this year’s string beans pack. The blaze started about 2:00 a.m. and raged six hours as rescue crews from Millington and Chestertown fought to save the building. George Phillips Jr and his wife leaped into the river to escape flames, swimming to safety after exits were blocked. Losses are insured, with damages at least $75,000.
