Greensboro Independence Day Celebration Proves Big Success
The Greensboro Lions Club and Athletic Association hosted a lively Fourth of July with morning youth games led by G B Hastings Carlton Porter and Richard Porter assisted by Dr Paul N Biggers. Events included relay races ball throw dash spoon race soap box derby and parade with numerous winners and prize categories noted. A 9-5 baseball loss for the home team Ridgely capped the day’s events with box scores promised on page 4.

Ferry Rams Bridge Pier Damages Bay Bridge Ferry
A Chesapeake Bay ferry loaded with holiday passengers and cars rammed a pier of the Bay Bridge near Western shore. The John M. Dennis sustained a five foot hole in its deck, knocked down about 20 passengers, and damaged nine cars. The bridge and pier showed no damage. Cross-bay service paused for about 30 minutes as ferries aided the damaged vessel and later resumed operations behind schedule. The collision was caused by a snapped steering cable as the Dennis, carrying about 65 cars and 190 people, moved at ten knots. captain Edward C. Higgins reversed engines, but momentum drove the bow into Pier 14. A painting foreman nearby described a tremor as the crash occurred.

Denton Home Supply near the Dentonia Theatre on Second Street opened in November 1946. Partners J. Norris Coulby and Lawrence Legates run a one stop shop offering hardware, paint, stoves, refrigerators, TV sets, appliances, furniture, firearms, floor covering and tools while stressing courteous service. Coulby, married with two children, lives on Franklin Street and attended Easton High School. Legates, married and a former milk route helper, lives on Third Street and attended Preston High School.

Artesian Well Owners Face Water Shortage in Denton Area
Artesian well owners centered around West Denton and South Second Street report a severe water shortage with some cases totalling no water. They blame recent deep wells opened nearby, while shallow driven wells seem unaffected. Maryland and Delaware forecast fair, cooler late week with showers Saturday and a trend toward cooler temps early next week.

Rural Leiter Carrier Retires After 48 Years
Henry M. Detwiler retires after 48 years and nearly 500000 miles with the U S Postal Service. Beginning in Ridgely Maryland in 1904 he later served Greensboro and Denton. He recalls horseback mail routes, blizzards, and long detours before regular roads. He earned recognition from officials and church leaders and plans to fish in retirement.

State Distributes Income Tax Receipts Across Maryland
Comptroller J Millard Tawes announced that Maryland transmitted checks totaling over five million dollars to counties and incorporated towns and cities from the 1951 tax return. A prior installment payment added $748,761.05 to subdivisions. For the year ending June 30 1952 total distributed to subdivisions was $8,473,157.06, about $270,000 more than the previous year. Caroline County totals: County Commissioners 15305.71, towns 9247.83, overall 24553.54.

State Police List 51 Fourth Violations In County
Troopers Harold Weir E C Myers and Cpl Gus G Koste arrested 51 violators of the Motor Vehicle Laws in Caroline County between midnight July 3 and midnight July 6. Denton Maintains 80 Cent Property Tax Rate This Year
Denton town commissioners keep the levy at 80 cents per $100 valuation with Oct 1 payment and discounts of 2 percent in August and 1 percent in September. Bills go out Aug. 1. The board purchased a tractor with scraper and mower, a police car, and an instrument to mark parking spaces. They graded and macadamized Lincoln, Franklin, Gay, Randolph, and portions of Third and Fourth Streets and all of Eighth Street. A new spraying solution will be used four times yearly to destroy flies and other insects.

34th Legion Convention In Session At Baltimore Hotel
The thirty four annual American Legion convention sits July 9 to 12 at the Lord Baltimore Hotel Baltimore.
