Funk Talks To Crowd Of Business Men

Senator John B. Funk of Frederick County and former Secretary of State, now Maryland Chief Engineer, addressed the Denton Chamber of Commerce on Governor Lane's 1947 tax program. The Ridgely Chamber joined Denton officers and locals as Funk outlined three revenue needs: racing and license fees and state income tax allocations, higher teacher salaries, and an overdue road system revision.

Felton Takes Mar Del League Lead in Tight Result

Felton moved into the Mar Del League lead after a 3 to 2 win over Camden Wyoming in a pitcher’s battle. Killen, Felton, and Sipple held the opposition to seven hits apiece as Felton led much of the game until C W pushed two runs in the seventh. Bell and Phillips fueled Camden Wyoming with key hits, while Denton rose to third by defeating Chestertown Legionnaires 8 to 2 behind Harry Hughes's three hit effort.

Boathouse Wrecked In Talbot Bomb Blast

Two bombs fell from a low-flying plane on Wittman Talbot County injuring two men and wrecking the boathouse where they worked. Police found a bomb fragment with a broken shackle and suspect an accidental release. No plane identified by nightfall. Residents saw a single engine plane overhead after 11 am.

Denton Rotary Club installed officers and committees for 1947 48 at the Brick Hotel. C P Merrick Jr was named president with Stewart Fitzgerald as vice president and Paul S VanDyke as secretary. Denton Girl Wins Honor At State Camp

Miss Patricia Pine of Denton was elected Governor of Camp Free State at Ft George G. Meade on June 28, part of Maryland Girls State for 100 delegates. The event ran June 26 to 29 with offices voted and citizenship talks. Pine and Charlotte McAllister, sponsored by Caroline Unit 29, will also represent Maryland at National Girls State in Washington, D. C. August 9 to 11.

Vansant New Head of Denton Lions Club

W Hyland Van Sant became president of the Denton Lions Club last Tuesday night as new officers for the year were installed. Rev Carl E Range resigns from Denton church

The Rev. Carl E Range rector of Christ Protestant Episcopal Church Denton for three years has resigned effective Tuesday. He and his wife and two daughters will spend the summer at Tryon North Carolina at Mrs Range's parents home. The Rev Francis K McNaul Jr of Philadelphia will fill the pulpit during July.

Mass X ray Survey Began In Caroline County

The first annual mass chest X ray survey for Caroline County started July 1 in Federalsburg Area, announced by Dr. W B Johnson health officer. A Maryland State Health Department mobile unit, with Maryland Tuberculosis Association cooperation, will visit varied county points to screen as many residents as possible. The effort aims to uncover tuberculosis early to curb spread and reduce economic distress from the disease. Contact Dr. Johnson at the Caroline County Health Department for schedule information.

Recreation Schedule With Varied Age Group Times

A local recreation program lists age based activity slots for 4 to 18 year olds. Programs include school groups, swimming sessions for 10 to 12 and 13 to 18, dancing on Fridays at the Episcopal parish house, and life saving lessons on Tuesday and Thursday mornings with Friday afternoon slots.

County Commissioners Prine Tax Rate 7 Cents Due To State Levies

County board cuts real estate levy 7 percent for next year due to higher state taxes. State rate stays 10 cents per 100. Budget shifts raise soil conservation and welfare costs, with school funding slashed from 139,075 to 121,161. Recreation Program Progressing Nicely

The Denton recreation program enters its second week with 495 attendees, about 99 per day, plus 15 more kindergartners seeking enrollment. Volunteers, led by Mrs. Steve Brown, arranged a weekly schedule to boost preschool social development. Highlights include a 6-9 year hike and weiner roast at Deep Shore and an Anderson Park camp demo by Dean Miller and Howard Dean teaching basic fire building and outdoor cooking. Swimmers remain popular with daily trips planned and transportation arranged by Tom Lockerman, Bill and Russ Orme, and Bud Roberts.
