Recreation Assoc Reports Progress for Denton Summer Program

Denton Recreation Association outlines plans for a six week summer program. Registration for ages 4 to 18 will be at Denton High School on Tuesday July 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 30 p.m. Miss Elwanda C. Welsh will lead activities with Mr Roman Bentz directing swimming and boys athletics. Swimming is 9 to 11 30 a.m. at Garland Lake with buses to the high school weekday mornings. Kindergarten classes may be at First Methodist Church. other activities at the school grounds unless noted.

Governor Declares Maryland Highway Safety Campaign

Governor William Preston Lane issued a proclamation designating July 1 to September 15 as a statewide highway safety campaign period in Maryland. He named William H. Bishop Jr. as the official state representative on the publicity committee, with G. Arthur McDaniel joining the effort, sponsored by the Maryland Press Association and supported by the National Safety Council.

Blight Warned For Tomatoes Potatoes By Maryland Expert

Dr. C. E. Cox of the University of Maryland College of Agriculture warns urgent fungicide application to halt late blight spreading in tomatoes and potatoes. He notes the disease is widespread and serious in the lower Eastern Shore counties, with only scattered cases elsewhere and none north or west of the bay.

Sudlersville defeated Townsend 18 to 5 to seize a share of first place in the Bi-State League, while Queenstown beat Henderson 13 to 5 and Millington topped Galena 8 to 1. Davison Earns Yale PhD and Sterling Fellowship

Perry W. Davison of Denton earned a Doctor of Philosophy at Yale Graduate School New Haven Conn on June 22 He won the Sterling Fellowship for 1947 48 and will join RCA labs at Princeton after a Navy career and Amherst and Rice credentials General Eisenhower also received an honorary PhD at Yale exercises Davison plans to settle in Princeton with his family after graduation and Navy service at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington

County Commissioners Cut Real Estate Tax Rate Five Cents

Caroline County commissioners held a special session and reduced the real estate levy by five cents per hundred dollars while the state tax rose from ten cents to 11.13 on 100 dollars. The overall county rate is set at 1.25 per 100 with a detailed levy to follow.

West Coast Hatchery Wins Chicken-Of-Tomorrow Contest

Wantress Hatchery of Marysville California won first prize of 5000 dollars in the finals of the national Chicken-of-Tomorrow Contest at Georgetown Delaware. Cornish New Hampshire crosses scored 159.8 points to top 39 finalists from 25 states. Arbur Bores Farm of Glastonbury Connecticut took second with 151.5 points and 1000 dollars. The joint Maine entry of H. E. Bates and E. J. Bittner tied for third with 500 dollars. Several other farms earned 100 dollar awards as the event closed a three year search for a superior meat type chicken. The festival included a Miss Delmarva pageant, a parade and air show drawing poultry leaders and officials.
