Elias W. Nuttle, president of The Nuttle Lumber and Coal Company in Denton, has received the Master Merchant certificate award from American Lumberman magazine in Chicago.
John W. Logan announces O. E. Roberts as chairman of the Denton Boy Scouts Troop Committee with a full slate of officers and the new Scoutmaster team. First meeting is Thursday July 7 at 7 30 p m in a temporary building behind Carlton Mandrell and weekly meetings follow.
Stafford Wallace Stafford named president of the Marydel Lions Club at the annual election in community hall. New officers include Herbert R. Butts first vice president William L. Oxley second vice president J Wesley Walls Jr third vice president Louis H. Collison secretary Amos H Wyatt treasurer Melvin Kinnamon lion tamer Roland Thompson tail twister. Directors are Harry H. Heather Howard B. Logan A Lee Harman Leonard A. Covell. Meeting ends for summer will resume the second Monday in September.
The Chamber of Commerce will discontinue meetings for July and August due to heat and low attendance. A special meeting may be called at any time if necessary.
Federal Judge T Alan Goldsborough, a Greensboro native, will be the principal speaker at the Greensboro Memorial Park dedication on July 4. Lions Club members will host a full all day program including a parade, ball game, fireworks, and a decorated-home contest.
The restoration of Old Wye Church in Wye Mills will bring hundreds of worshippers July 13 at noon. William G. Perry, famed for Williamsburg, supervised two years of careful work on the church and Vestry House begun in 1721, with historical notes by Elizabeth Merritt. The ceremony features bishops Brown Powell Gunn and rector Donaldson. Outside loudspeakers will serve the overflow crowd.
The daily program for the Peninsula Conference Summer School of Missions at Wesley Junior College Dover Delaware runs July 18 22. Registration July 18 12 30 2 00 PM followed by class sessions 9 00 10 50 AM for the rest of the week.
Colonel Beverly Ober and other state leaders announce a July Fourth safety vigil with all traffic officers on duty. Maryland aims to build on its record weekend, canceling leaves to assist motorists. Pedestrian accidents remain top concern, with warnings about crossing at non intersections and unsafe behaviors around roadways.
Richard A. Greenwood, new assistant agricultural agent for Caroline County, is a World War II veteran and University of Maryland graduate. A Walkersville 4-H alumnus and former state livestock judging champion, he earned the DFC and Air Medal in the South Pacific. He and his wife Nancy plan to live and work in Caroline County.
Farmer members of Southern States Cooperative in the Denton area will hold their local annual membership meeting July 18. The session starts at 8:30 p m DST at Caroline High School. The meeting will include a Farm-Grown Hat contest, election of new members to the Board and Farm Home Committee, and reports on Southern States and local operations.
Downward trend in Maryland employment continued into May with a 4,000 drop in 30 days, bringing total employed workers to 678,800. Industrial plants shed 19,900 vs 1948, led by transportation equipment and chemicals, while nonmanufacturing saw gains in government and services. Mining fell 1,000 year over year. construction, transportation and trade also declined. Continued on page 10.
Twenty nine Maryland Eastern Shore entrants join others for Salisbury July 12 National Chicken Cooking Contest with more than 150 expected. prizes total 250 cash plus ranges and a breakfast set, plus 125 75 and 50 cash for lower places. Judging by five New York experts aboard a plane. Notable entrants include C Douglas Sergeant Milton Holden Arthur Disharoon and more from Salisbury Wilmington Washington Georgetown and Cambridge with several family entries. A Miss Delmarva prelims July 12 at Memorial Field Salisbury selects six finalists from each state for the July 13 finals and the queen who wins a 750 college scholarship or 506 cash. A Poultry and Egg Show runs July 12 at State Teachers College Gym. Parade on July 14 expected large with festival officers named from Maryland and Delaware communities.
H E Holsinger says the Cooperative Federal land bank system, including the National Farm Loan Association of Easton, Md, has surpassed four billion dollars in loan volume to farmers since 1917. He notes the system is farmer-owned, funded by private investors through farm loan bonds, and operates in 1241 associations nationwide to offer long term mortgage credit at low cost.
Caroline county hosts its fourth annual 4-H Club calf show at Garland Lake near Denton on July 14 from 10 a m to 3 p m. Over 25 entries expected, with Francis M. Rogers in charge of registration and Joseph Pou of Maryland University acting as judge.
Dr. R H Riley warns Marylanders of holiday accident danger during the Fourth of July weekend. He notes many injuries on holidays and urges safety over speed on crowded highways as part of a nationwide campaign aiming to cut highway deaths by 40 percent in three years.
Caroline Short on bond drive reports on the Opportunity Savings Bonds Campaign for the period ending June 25. Caroline county has sold 90.7 percent of its $51,000 quota and ranks 23 counties plus Baltimore City. To July 15, residents must purchase $4,727 in E Bonds to catch Harford and Baltimore, which have met and oversubscribed their quotas.
