Hughes for Congress gains Kibler as Honorary Chairman

State Senator Harry R. Hughes filed for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Eastern Shore in Annapolis. He announced J. Thomas Kibler as Honorary Chairman of the Hughes for Congress Campaign Committee. Kibler praised Hughes, noting a decade in the General Assembly and fiscal leadership, and his long service to Washington College and Kent County civic life.

Christmas Seal Sales Are Short in Caroline County

Mrs. Irvin Brumbaugh, campaign chair, said $48.22 more is needed to meet the Caroline County Tuberculosis and Health Association goal, with $3,472.15 raised this campaign toward last year’s $3,520.37. Last reminders went to noncontributors as residents are urged to donate. Meanwhile Mrs. Aubrey Boone, of Denton, is in satisfactory condition after losing her right hand in an exhaust fan accident at Town Cleaners.

Grand Jury Seeks Broad Reforms for Caroline County

Grand Jury under foreman Jerome Frampton Jr urges sweeping changes to alcoholic beverage control laws and law enforcement coordination in Caroline County. After eight days of deliberations and 43 witnesses, the panel calls for more state troopers, closer cooperation among authorities, stricter age proof for liquor sales, licensing law revisions, and expanded anti litter education with inmate participation.

March of Dimes Campaign Active in Caroline County

Louis C. Andrew reports the March of Dimes is in full swing with door to door solicitation in parts of the county and mail appeals sent to nearly 5,000 homes and businesses. Residents are urged to send donations to the Caroline Polio Fund in Denton Maryland, with emphasis on any amount. The Federalsburg area sees V F W volunteers handling requests locally.

Maryland Regents to visit county for Eastern Shore campus site

The University of Maryland Board of Regents visits Friday to consider an Eastern Shore branch site. Caroline and Queen Anne counties back a central Hillsboro Queen Anne area near Tuckahoe Park with Dorchester and Talbot opposing a rival site. The day includes a luncheon with local committees and a site tour.

Folksing Scheduled At North Caroline High

The National Honor Society of North Caroline High hosts a Folksing on Saturday February 8 from 8 to 10 in the cafetorium. Students will sing popular folk songs with master of ceremonies Mr Fred Asilton and a team of performers. Admission is 25 cents with refreshments sold during intermission.

Fire damages American Legion Post near Denton

A blaze ignited in the ceiling of the American Legion Post Frame near Denton on Tuesday, causing interior damage. Denton Volunteer Fire Department said the fire was found by Legion Auxiliary members preparing a dinner, and electrical wiring was blamed for the fire.

Co op Members to Receive Capital Credit Checks

Choptank Electric Cooperative plans to mail Capital Credit refunds for members from 1939 to 1945 when revenues exceeded expenses. Some checks may be as small as six or 29 cents, depending on electricity usage. President Howard Hall and Manager F. E. Yeoman praise staff for handling the process, note multiple checks per member possible, and urge recipients to save or spend locally to boost the Eastern Shore economy.

Warn Denton motorists to remove keys amid theft spike

State Police urge motorists in Caroline County to lock ignition and take keys, noting it is required by law. Two youths, aged 15 and 16, were charged as juvenile delinquents after thefts in Denton. A school bus was damaged in a crash with a car driven by Jacob Schmick of Preston failing to stop for the bus. Another accident injured Sharon Brooks of Denton at Routes 404 and 309.
