Group Forms to Seek Route 312 Upgrades in Caroline County

Residents of Ridgely and upper Caroline County organized the Route 312 Improvement Association led by Edward Sparks to press for improvements to nine miles of State Route 312 between Ridgely and Baltimore Corner. An organizational meeting at the Ridgely fire hall drew 19 residents as a mass meeting was planned with State Senator Hughes and County Commissioners, citing danger from the road’s narrow width and upcoming traffic from a $750,000 addition to St. Benedictine School for Exceptional Children.

Fatal Shooting Is Termed death by own action

A 25 year old Greensboro man Eddie Griffith was found dead with a head wound in a farm trailer. Police ruled the shooting self inflicted with a 22 caliber pistol. Investigators set the time between Sunday night and Monday morning. Funeral services were held for Griffith in Greensboro.

District Superintendent To Be St Luke's Speaker

Dr. Howard M. Amoss, superintendent of the Easton District, will preach at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Denton during the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services next Sunday, January 26. Amoss is a Western Maryland College and Wesley Seminary graduate who began in the Baltimore Conference and has served Centre Street Cumberland, Bethesda Salisbury, and Easton since his 1963 appointment.

Shortage of doctors in county area prompts postponed meeting

A scheduled Denton town and County Commissioners meeting to address a critical doctor shortage in central and upper county areas was postponed with no rescheduled date given. The region has lost three GPs in the past year and a half, leaving four doctors to serve about 19,000 residents amid rising patient loads. Local groups have pressed to attract new physicians but have met little success.

Clarke retires as Denton secretary treasurer after 14 years

James M. Clarke, secretary and treasurer to the Commissioners of Denton, retires effective December 31 after 14 years in office. Mayor Walter B. Palmer Jr. and the commissioners publicly thank him for his service and wish him well in retirement. Clarke has long served in Denton’s insurance business and joined town duties in 1949.

State Trooper Activity During The Past Week

Five persons were killed on Maryland highways last week per a Maryland State Police survey. Three were drivers, two were passengers. Alcohol contributed to one death, speed to four, and driver error occurred in all fatalities. Colonel Carey Jarman urged stronger chemical test laws, noting tests show high alcohol involvement among fatals and arguing for obligatory tests to deter drunken driving.

Firearms Stolen From Will's Sporting Goods

Police report a break in at Will's Sporting Goods on Franklin Street. Several shotguns and high powered rifles valued at 600 dollars were stolen on the night of January 16 with State Police assisting Denton Town Police in the investigation.
