Industry of discovery drives postwar economic growth
M J Rathbone of Standard Oil of New Jersey argues research is a major postwar industry, noting research and development spending rose from about $2.5 billion in 1949 to $12.5 billion in 1959, three quarters from industrial research. He highlights war spur and future potential, citing radar, synthetic rubber, atomic energy, drugs, computers, fibers, plastics, jet aircraft, missiles, and the unpredictable pace of scientific progress. He warns that prediction is impossible and calls for continued dynamic growth and confidence.
