Two Children Fatally Burned In Home
A fire two miles north of Denton on the Denton-Greensboro highway killed two children, Samuel Edward age 2 and Allen Lester age 1, who were left alone in their parents home, Mrs and Mr Edward Anthony. The mother was away briefly and returned to find the house and contents destroyed. The Denton Volunteer Fire Company responded quickly but the four room dwelling was fully consumed and the origin could not be determined.

No February or March draft call issued in Maryland
Colonel Henry C. Stanwood, Selective Service Director for Maryland, announced that the February induction call for Maryland is cancelled and no call will be issued for March. He noted that delivery of registrants for physical examinations is stopped and local boards will drop I A and II A O classifications, while deferred classes remain. River Dragged For Missing Fisherman
Maryland State Police and the Denton Fire Company dragged the Cheptank river this week for the body of a 43 year old Denton painter who has been missing since last Saturday. Ed Mitchell was last seen fishing from his motor powered rowboat a few miles from Denton. The boat was found drifting under Lyford Wharf on Sunday. Trooper Gus Koste leads the search and believes Mitchell fell overboard and drowned. Mitchell, unmarried, lived with his mother in Denton and worked for a painting contractor.

Dr Nelson Carey of the University of Maryland Hospital spoke on Diabetes and Its Complications before 38 physicians from Kent Queen Annes Talbot and Caroline counties at the Upper Eastern Shore Medical Society meeting at the Brick Hotel. Dr H F Kinnamon of Easton reported on the Maryland Medical and Chirurgical Society centennial to be celebrated in Baltimore in April. The group asked Dr Harold Plummer of Preston to send sympathy to Mrs Joseph Ross of Trappe after her husband died suddenly crossing the Choptank River Bridge in Cambridge. Ross served as Talbot County Medical Society secretary for 30 years.

Production Credit Stockholders Meet in Denton
The Denton Production Credit Association held its fifteenth annual stockholders meeting at the Dentonia Theatre in Denton Maryland on Tuesday January 18 1949. Br J Franklin Baker president welcomed the largest attendance in the association history with 41 percent of Class B stockholders present. Members discussed achieving complete ownership requiring each stockholder to buy an equal number of shares. Secretary Treasurer Chas E Hadaway reported many subscriptions already. The business for 1948 totaled over 1 000 000 with presentations by H G Baker fieldman of the Baltimore Production Credit Corporation and other officials from the Delaware and National Farm Loan associations. Attendees came from Kent Queen Annes Talbot Dorchester and Caroline Counties.

Albanus Phillips longtime Maryland packing industry pioneer dies at his home at 4 30 AM Monday aged 77 after two years of illness. He founded Philips Packing 47 years ago and retired as president in June 1946, succeeded by Albanus Phillips Jr. Admiral Byrd honored him by naming the Colonel Albanus Phillips Mountains in Antarctica for his food counsel work. Born 1871 at Golden Hill Dorchester County, he was son of George W Phillips and Mary Leonard.

Seventy six parents and teachers met at Hardy School to organize a new Parent-Teacher Association. Officers elected are Mrs Wm. At a January 11 1949 board meeting Peoples Bank unanimously recommended amending the Articles of Incorporation to authorize a 50 percent stock dividend to stockholders of record February 1 1949. Capital would rise from 50000 to 75000 with one new $10 share issued for every two existing shares. Fractional shares will be redeemed at par or more as approved by the board and Bank Commissioner. The increase follows asset growth since 1933 with concurrence from the FDIC and State Banking Department.

Four Escape Bull In Wild Flight
A bull at Edward Towers farm in American Corners escaped via an electric fence after reacting to a girl’s red sweater. Mrs. Towers and her sister Mrs. John Howard with two children Shirley Towers and Earl Towers Jr. fled across fields through woods brambles and a stream to a farmhouse for safety. Mrs. Howard remains under doctor care after the incident.
