Noted organist Dr. Rollo F. Maitland of Philadelphia will give an organ recital January 24 1949 at First Methodist Church Denton. He heads the Philadelphia Musical Academy organ department and serves at Church of the New Jerusalem. Limited seating. tickets in advance.
Ernest J. Pearson was unanimously elected president of the Greensboro Volunteer Fire Company at its annual meeting. Two new members joined, Alex H. Frentzen and David Morris, along with a parade director committee. Other officers include Woodie Dill as vice president and W Byron Poore as fire chief. Delegates to the Caroline County Firemen's Association were named, and the unit answered 38 alarms in 1948 with a major blaze at Goldsboro on March 5.
The National Guard Bobcats remained atop the Del League with a 73 31 victory over the Cecilton Drakes on Tuesday January 11. Chestertown, also undefeated, planned a Denton Armory game on January 22 against Chestertown and faced Dover on Wednesday while Eyed for a grueling 10 day stretch with several road tests ahead. Bob Lane returned to top form scoring 38 in two recent outings, with Charley Wimbrow out injured and Barney Nuttle contributing strong backcourt work and rebounding. Basil Tracy added tenacity in the Cecilton win as the squad rounds into shape for a heavy schedule.

The Denton Volunteer Fire Company announces its 6th Annual Drive for Honorary Membership to boost support. Chimney fires caused many losses in 1948 with 56 total calls and $23,640 in damage. Ambulance trips reached a record 92 with only $186.50 in donations, as Sam Cloud oversees all ambulance calls with contact through Phone 249.
Mrs. Virginia S. Townsend was installed as Worthy Matron of Caroline Chapter No. 62, Order of the Eastern Star, at a regular meeting last Thursday. Visitors included relatives from Holly Chapter No. 45 and Wicomico No. 91 Salisbury. Installation was led by Ruth Chambers with Ethel R. Moore and Mildred C. Johnson assisting. Additional officers named include A. E. Miller, Esther S. Brooks, Hugh Ramsey, Mildred C. Butler, C. Elsie Billmeier, Mary S. Smith, Anna C. West, Florence Messer, Bessie Koste, Helen Gibson, Margaret Marine, Harriet Garey, Ruth Harris, Lillian C. Irwin, Dolly Allfather, Helen Ludwig, Marvin E. Chambers, and retiring Matron Florence Messer receiving the Past Matron jewel. Gifts and flowers were presented to Mrs Messer and Mrs Townsend.

The plan includes a mayor plus four town commissioners, biennial election of two commissioners, three zoning commissioners for residential commercial and manufacturing zones, and extending town limits to include areas seeking paved streets and utilities. The sixty ninth annual stockholders meeting of Denton National Bank was held January 11 1949 in the Bank boardroom. Nine initial officers were entertained at a Brick Hotel dinner before. Directors elected were Chaffinch Everngamn and others with 951 votes. The board re elected Chaffinch as president and Everngamn as vice president. Officers listed include Fleetwood Ricards Chaffinch Jr Kirby Newman Parker Redden Beauchamp Thawley. Chaffinch noted strong local lending growth and higher profits, aiming to maintain sound finances for the coming year.
G M Nelson vice president of Eastern Shore Public Service announces a 3 million dollar 15 000 kw unit placed in service at the Vienna Maryland plant. The Vienna facility now totals 57 000 kw capacity, the sixth unit, with the Delmarva Peninsula growth driving further expansions to meet rising demand across homes farms and industries.
The Greensboro Lions Club begins rehearsals for its annual Minstrel Show led by Carman Leggett director. Rehearsals occur weekly at the Lions hall ahead of performances March 9 and 10 at Greensboro School auditorium to fund Welfare Committee projects. Leggett brings theater background and promises fresh innovations and a new 25 by 14 foot backdrop by Sophie R. Coyle.
The annual Polio Fund drive to aid Infantile Paralysis research begins Saturday January 15 in Caroline County. A two week drive will cover Denton and nearby towns with local solicitors led by Mrs. Louis J Knotts and a long list of routes and volunteers including Mrs J Norman Clark and Mrs Francis A Yeates.
Rotarians from Caroline Kent Queen Annes and Talbot counties will attend an inter city Rotary meeting in Easton on January 20. Principal speaker will be H T Low a Scotsman and attorney in Bulawayo Southern Rhodesia who serves as second vice president of Rotary International. Members from Denton Federalsburg Chestertown Centreville St Michaels and Easton will attend.
