On January 16 1935 the court ordered the Auditor's Report be ratified and confirmed unless good cause is shown within three weeks from January 19 1935. Caroline county health nurse Miss Mattie Smith logged 551 miles in December. She handled communicable disease control with Schick tests and toxoid doses, tuberculosis supervision, maternal and infant hygiene visits, school health work, and health education talks. A County Nursing Board gift program for tuberculosis sanatorium patients was well received.
The annual meeting of the Stockholders of the Farmers & Merchants State Bank of Denton will be held in their banking house in Denton Md on Tuesday January 29 1935 between 8 and 8 30 p m for the purpose of electing directors for the ensuing year. GEORGE W BECK Cashier.
Denton defeated Trappe 4 to 2 last Sunday in a tense game. Denton led 2 0 after the first quarter as Trappe held the wind early, then Denton rallied with Butch Young and Harvey Fleetwood scoring in the third period. Buck Bennington added a late goal after Trappe pressured. apparent protest to the match was received by Raymond Beauchamp, league president, with grounds not disclosed.
The Fourth Annual Caroline County Young Peoples Conference will convene February 1 at Federalsburg Methodist Episcopal Church, starting 1 45 PM. Registration and banquet cost 60 cents, with menus by Federalsburg ladies. Program includes worship, address on Youth and the Changing World by Rev T D Milbury, and discussion groups on Sundays, home orders, crime in student view, plus recreation and officer installations. Rev N A Leese presides and Miss Ruth Voshell reads recreation. Miss Pauline Albertson and Miss Merlyn Kern lead segments.
The Denton County Jail, built in 1902, has been cleaned, repaired, and repainted. Previously rotted toilets and vermin were reported, with odor and poor conditions. Now walls are gray, windows washed, floors scrubbed, new toilets, and sheriff’s residence updated. Citizens may not fully appreciate the renovation’s impact.
The Maryland State Roads Commission reports Caroline County maintained roads and bridges last fiscal year at $86.53 per mile, the lowest among 20 counties. Under Harry Waldorf, the county saved funds, allocated $21,745 to debt service, built nearly 5 miles of new State Roads, and left a $40,018.93 surplus as of October 1934. Average cost per mile was for the year ending September 30, 1931.
The Claiborne Annapolis Ferry Company board voted unanimously at Easton to request Governor Nice omit any subsidy in the coming budget. President Emerson Harrington said the company never demanded aid and that past subsidies helped lower rates. The firm notes it carried three million passengers and 800,000 vehicles across Chesapeake Bay and has two main ferries, the Ritchie and Dennis, plus a reserve Governor Harrington.
W H Evans County Agent reports notable progress in eliminating Bangs disease in Caroline County cattle herds. Testing shows higher losses in infected herds and minimal losses in previously untroubled herds, with some herds losing none. The Federal Bureau of Animal Industry funds testing at no cost, conducts three tests, and requires ongoing testing until disease clearance. Indemnities of 20 per head for grades and 60 for purebreds are paid, plus beef price for slaughtered cattle.
