Fire Tragedy Claims Man and Animals in Caroline County

A young white man, Leo Wright, 28, died from fatal burns after his clothing caught fire while asleep at a farm home near Greensboro. The fire also killed a dog and a cat and destroyed a two story house near Concord owned by Miss Minnie Todd. Wright, who had moved from North Carolina, was taken to Kent General Hospital in a dying condition after being found ablaze outside his home by Pruitt of Greensboro. Authorities accepted the claim that Wright’s clothing ignited as he slept, despite initial Delaware moonshine accident speculation. The burned body was returned to Greensboro. The tenant house burned eight miles south of Denton, owned by Miss Minnie Todd, and occupied by Hayward Satterfield, with a dog and a cat perishing. A white laborer, Samuel Allen, aided in attempts to save the animals before the fire consumed the building valued at about $700.
