A $250000 fire swept Laurel Delaware’s business district, destroying five buildings and damaging three more along Market Street. The L. B. Riggin Hardware Store was leveled while the Laurel House Hotel, evacuated, stood with fifteen rooms. No injuries were reported and firemen from multiple towns aided, as authorities assessed damage and cause.

The 480-foot Chesapeake Bay Bridge span, which broke from towing tugs and struck the bridge, was refloated in 42 minutes and moved west of the main ship channel. Inspectors will assess damaged trusses before reattachment, with timing uncertain. The incident occurred during a squall as the span was moved to Piers 28 and 29, east of the main channel, and it struck Piers 36 and 37 before grounding on the Eastern Shore.

Naturalist Says The Atlantic Is Slowly Covering Peninsula
James A. Fowler of the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences spoke at a Caroline County Bird Club event in Denton last week. He described the Delmarva Peninsula as a naturalist’s delight, noting the Atlantic Coastal Plain once covered the area, that the land is slowly subsiding yet poses no imminent danger. He warned sea rise of 100 feet would flood parts of Virginia, Maryland, and Delaware, but geologists say such changes would occur over millions of years. He highlighted local flora and fauna including Spanish moss, Cobb Island terns, and Pocomoke Swamp life, urging interest from sportsmen and students. A. J.
