The regular PTA gathering moves from Monday Jan 9 to Monday Jan 16 at 8 pm due to hazardous road conditions. W Stewart Fitzgerald County Superintendent discusses school finances with school principals present. By-laws approval and state education proposals are on the agenda. Refreshments, child care, and open rooms for visitors.
Caroline Chapter No 62 O E S installs officers at a regular meeting on Thursday evening January 5 with Ruth J Crouse as Worthy Matron and Earl M Crouse as Worthy Patron. Installing officers include Price E Wilson Mildred C Johnson Hazel D Wright Anna C West Elizabeth Morgan Margaret L Marine and Benjamin F Johnson. Guests came from Federalsburg Salisbury Chestertown and FPaston.
Miss Annie P. Rogers from the University of Maryland spoke to the Denton Rotary Club on January 3 about Farm and Home Development as a superior extension method. She urged farm families to use Extension Service help to plan for higher living standards, stressing that families, not agents, make final farm plans and decisions. Weather outlook noted: Jan 13-14 fair and frosty, 15-17 cold, 18-19 rain or snow.
Maryland's 12 year road rehabilitation program shows 583 miles completed or under construction after two years, about 25 percent in Caroline County. The total plan targets 3,452 miles statewide with $7.3 million estimated in Caroline County and projects spanning primary and secondary routes including new dual highways.
Clothing leaders from local clubs gather January 20 at 1 pm in the Fellowship Room Church of the Brethren Denton to view an accessories for the basic costume demonstration by Mrs. Nelson Covey. The program will feature model outfits by Mrs. Otto Eberhardt and Frances Fisher with a navy cotton dress, plus commentary by Mrs. Mina Schoenfelder who chairs the Caroline Council Clothing Committee.
Caroline County Bird Club will meet at the Health Center Den ton at 8 p m on Thursday Jan 19. The program features a 45 minute film Bob white Through the Year produced by the Missouri Conservation Commission and provided by the Caroline County District Soil Conservation Service. Members will discuss late fall and early winter sightings including Christmas Counts with 60 species recorded by Caroline County and 99 by Talbot County. All interested in wildlife conservation may attend.
Caroline High announces adult classes to start the week of January 16. Schedule shows Shorthand and Typewriting on several evenings, Home Furnishing midweek, with openings for enrollment until full. Courses taught by Dana McClung and Irvin Smith as Denton PTA organizes the program.
John W. Faulkner, longtime Choptank Electric Cooperative employee since 1947 and former Staking Engineer, is appointed District Manager for Sudlersville succeeding Frank Palmatory who retires due to impaired health. Faulkner, a Caroline County native, served in the Army Air Corps 1942 46 and helped survey for the cooperative in its early buildout.
More than 300 civic leaders are expected at the Governor's Committee to Keep Maryland Beautiful meeting in Baltimore on Thursday January 19 at 1 30 p m The Assembly Room Association of Commerce 22 Light Street serves as the venue The event is the fourth of five regional meetings to discuss progress and future plans for statewide beautification programs John E Clark chairman will preside The program features color slides showing early progress trash can and sign projects and a discussion of local issues with plans for the Annual Clean Up Week in early spring Open to the public.
Caroline County Soil Conservation District holds its annual Local Board meeting at Caroline High School at 7 30 p m January 20. Chairman Harry H Rieck invites farmers and families to learn district progress and aims with Dr Gordon Cairns and William Sengerman as speakers. Musical entertainment and refreshments are planned.
A severe sleet storm swept through Caroline County last Monday bringing icy roads and hazardous travel. Schools closed early to allow bus transportation home before dark as state crews began grading and addressing curves and intersections while state police logged minor accidents in neighboring counties.
The Wilmer Fell Davis Company celebrated its fortieth year in the egg and poultry industry marking a shift from marketing eggs to hatching eggs while maintaining a focus on quality. The firm began in Federalsburg and grew from egg collection to major poultry buying on the Eastern Shore.
Robert W. Downes Jr announces a one day institute for Friday Jan 20 preceding the Maryland State Bar Association Mid Winter Meeting at the Sheraton Belvedere Hotel Baltimore. The program includes a mock trial on Work mens Compensation practice moderated by W Albert Menchine a lecture on Tax Hints For The General Practitioner by James R Sharp a luncheon talk by Jack Dunn and an afternoon session on Negotiating Settlements In Personal Injury Cases presided by Hon Michael Paul Smith.
The 213th meeting of Arm Bureau Planning Group No 6 gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. Boone Jarrell in Ridgely for a festive year end gathering. Twenty three of twenty five members attended a program of carols, laughter, and reminiscences orchestrated by recreation chairman Mrs. Clifton Crouse. An annual gift exchange produced humorous incidents and final gift revealed stationery for Mrs. Jarrell.
Troops 45 and 36 met Tuesday in Caroline High School library to view Home-Made Happiness. The film offered hints for Homemaking badges. After the screening a Court of Honor awarded First Class Badges to Shirley Anthony and Mary Lou Kerslake, the first for Troop 45.
The Denton National Bank held its seventy fifth annual stockholders meeting in the bank board room on January 10 1956. Officials announced a plan to reduce par value from 100 to 25 and issue 4000 shares. Directors were elected including J Roland Chaffinch and J Lester Evergain and president Chaffinch received thanks for thirty years of service.
A Denton Little League group elected 1956 officers Alfred Reddish as president Tayloe Lewis as vice president Fred Asiiton as secretary and Robert W Downes Jr as treasurer. A committee led by Downes with Fred Usilton Mrs Patience Usilton and Tayloe Lewis will draft a budget and report ideas next meeting.
The Maryland Frozen Food Locker Association hosted Maryland Farm Bureau members at the Lord Baltimore Hotel in Baltimore for a "From Pasture To Plate" demonstration. A staged old fashioned kitchen and a modern locker setup showcased farm and plant processed foods, with association members on hand to answer questions. Door prizes were awarded to Farm Bureau attendees at each afternoon session.
Maryland and Baltimore City Health departments, after a conference with the State Advisory Committee on Poliomyelitis Vaccine, announce an extension of the current priority for polio vaccine. The new policy makes any child over 1 year and under 16 eligible, covering ages 1 through 15 inclusive.
The tower and spire of First Methodist Church will be lit each evening as a memorial gift from the family of the late William I and Anna Wright Norris. Dr John E French said the lighting was set as a memorial and would be marked soon. The illuminated spire aims to inspire and please all who pass by.
