Denton Woman's Club Hosts A Day In Court Program

A Maryland group of 24 women from the Denton and Federalsburg clubs visited Caroline County Courthouse on February 18 to observe Juvenile Court proceedings. Judge J DeWeese Carter explained court aims, then three cases were heard demonstrating rehabilitation over punishment.

Christ Church Family Suppers Begin Lenten Season in Denton

Christ Church Denton will resume Family Suppers starting March 10 at 6 p.m. and continue weekly through April 7 with chairwomen coordinating parishioners for each evening. Daily prayers and Lenten services are noted, including Ash Wednesday 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. Prayer Group and Holy Communion.

New License Tags On Sale And Display March 1

John R. Jewell, Commissioner of Motor Vehicles, announces licenses for privately owned passenger cars and motorcycles are on sale at the Department of Motor Vehicles and may be displayed on and after March 1. If liability insurance is carried, no extra bond fee. if not, an $8.00 surcharge applies. If applications are not received by February 25, notify in writing with full name, new and old addresses, title number, and current tag number. Trucks and other classes to be mailed March 31.

Veterans Pension Act of 1959 Explained Meeting

The Veterans Administration and the Veterans of Foreign Wars announce an informational meeting in Easton on Friday March 11 at 7 30 p m at the V F W Post Home Glebe Road. Officials will explain the old and new Veterans Pension Acts and assist veterans widows and orphans in choosing an option before July 1 1960.

Passwaters Wins Prize In Baltimore Exhibition

Gilbert Passwaters of Preston Trading Company shares the Mrs Simon J Brager Prize with Robert Wirth of Baltimore for the charcoal drawing Figure The 32 year old artist from Wilmington Del calls the piece a subconscious reproduction of his payroll work at Preston Trucking Company The drawing will be shown at the Maryland Artists Exhibition Feb 28 to March 20 in Baltimore

Area WSCS Members Met At First Church

About 125 members and friends of ten area churches met in the Sanctuary of First Methodist Church on Tuesday evening with Mrs. Carlton V. West presiding. Mrs. Theodore Manlove and others led a session on How Total Is My Stewardship with music by Mrs. Morgan Williams and others. Speakers from district societies spoke on duties and forthcoming events including a union Circle meeting on March 21 with Miss Genevieve Poppi as guest speaker. Refreshments followed in Fellowship Hall.

Spelling Contest Plans Complete Says Leach

John G. Leach, director of education at Golden Beacom School of Business Wilmington, announced plans for the college spelling contest are complete and that confidential contest words have been sent to high school English teachers. The top three spellers in each senior and junior class will be crowned champions and receive awards from Wilmington College. Last year’s champions included students from Caroline High School Greensboro High School and several tied winners. The contest was conducted by senior and junior English instructors from those schools.

Child Beater Convicted: Sentence Is Suspended

On Feb 18 Chief Judge J De Weese Carter sentenced Calvin Whittington to one year in the Maryland House of Correction with the sentence suspended under strict conditions to be imposed later. He was placed on probation for contributing to the neglect of minor children after a Feb 13 beating in Ridgely. Other men were similarly sentenced for offenses including revoked license driving and simple assault.

Denton Woman's Club Fashion Show to Benefit Building Fund

Denton Woman's Club plans a dessert fashion show on Thursday March 24 in the Cafetorium at North Carolina High School Denton. Mrs K T Everngain is general chair with an assisting committee including Mrs James K Cooper and Mrs Charles V Moore. Proceeds go to the Building Improvement Fund and door prizes will be awarded.

Preston High School Contract Awarded to Hallock

At a special Board of Education meeting on Friday February 12 Hallock Construction Inc was awarded the Preston High School contract for 65900 dollars beating Charles E Brohawn Bros 68355 dollars and John H Briggs Co 79600 dollars. Preceding the work a new roof windows and other repairs costing about 15000 dollars were completed after the December 2 fire. The contract covers rebuilding the burned auditorium stage and three classrooms and repairing water and smoke damage with some summer renovations 1960 included.

Widening and resurfacing of 404 planned for fall

Senator Harry R. Hughes said the State Roads Commission informed him that Route 404 between Route 50 and Queen Anne will begin after Labor Day. The work, chosen for lighter summer traffic, will include grading widening and resurfacing and aims to be finished by the 1961 traffic season.

Harmony Church Announces New Narthex Addition

Harmony Methodist Church outlines plans to add a two level narthex connecting the existing sanctuary and moved Sunday School building. Projected cost about 25000 dollars with a kickoff banquet set for February 29 at 6 30 pm. Committees listed for campaign leadership and operations.

State Trooper Activity Reports For Past Week

State Police list several accidents from February including a Millerstown Maryland driver’s overturned car on Mt. Zion Road, a rear collision on State Route 577 causing total loss for Eugene Gerardi, and a left side crash on Route 313 with injuries. Charges include speeding, parking without lights, failing to grant right of way, license and reckless driving, plus an alcohol related charge. Additional incidents include a head on collision near Goldsboro and a burglary and larceny cases linked to a VFW Club and Dawson's Hideaway. Also reported are assault with intent to murder and a domestic axe incident with subsequent shooting.
