Mental Health Assn. Dinner for Maryland Legislators
The Maryland Association for Mental Health hosted a dinner at Carvel Hall Annapolis during the state session inviting all legislators. Attendees included two county lawmakers and three Caroline County Mental Health reps. Drs Lemkau and Tuerk spoke on progress and public attitudes, with former Pennsylvania official Harry Shapiro delivering the main address on improvements since 1955.

Daytona 500 Crown Goes To Johnson After Turbulent Race
Junior Johnson of Ronda North Carolina won the Daytona 500 as spins, crashes, and fires punctuated the event at Daytona International Speedway. He finished 23 seconds ahead of Bobby Johns of Miami with Richard Petty third and Lee Petty fourth. The race featured 126 laps of caution and several injuries, including a fractured wrist and eye injuries to Tommy Herbert of Miami. Glenn Roberts led early but faded after an accident delay.

Valentine Dance To Be Held Again February 20

Rapist Held On Bond In Ridgely Case
Paul Eugene Thomas, 28, of Ridgely, was ordered on Feb 11 held on a $1500 bond by Magistrate Wright for last month statutory rape of a 13 year old girl on Hell's Lane near Ridgely. Bail discretionary with Magistrate per Court of Appeals. A $1500 check was posted Feb 12 and he was released. Magistrate Tilghman in Federalsburg fined Walter Marine $10 for reckless driving on Feb 8, Joseph Blackwell $10 for disorderly conduct on Feb 12, Craig Ricketts $20 for no license and failing to obey summons, and Brooks Donavan $10 for assault. Donavan received 30 days suspended jail time.

Denton builds 80 car parking lot on Market Street
Work began this week on an 80 car parking lot behind business blocks on Market Street between First and Second. The project, planned by the Denton Planning Commission and funded by local businesses, will raze a brick garage owned by Eastern Shore Public Service Co and extend from behind the Denton National Bank to the Law Building. The site will be graded and surfaced with bank run gravel liquid asphalt and stone chips for three car lanes with entrance from Second Street and exit at the west end.

State Trooper Activity During The Past Week
The State Police weekly report notes several incidents. A 1952 Chevrolet driven by Isaac Brown and a 1955 Chevrolet driven by Howard Eugene Richard collided on Route 480 near Greensboro as vehicle 2 turned left. vehicle 1 had no lights and both drivers faced reckless driving charges. A 1957 GMC truck driven by Norman Taylor Wright sideswiped the Choptank Bridge at Denton on Route 404. Wright was charged with failing to identify himself and reckless driving. Feb 7 saw three colored juveniles charged with possessing alcoholic beverages, and James Percy Dickerson, 21, of Goldsboro, charged with purchasing liquor from minors. On Feb 2 Willard Homer Doherty of Ridgely faced a neglect of a minor charge, Eleanor Mildred Melvin of Ridgey faced abandonment, continued on page 4.
