Birthplace of Washington Landmark and Wakefield Estate
Washington's Birthplace in Westmoreland Virginia is part of the George Washington Birthplace National Monument. The old house burned on December 25 1780 and the site was restored between 1930 and 1932 on its original site. The 400 acre reservation includes the family burial ground with Washingtons ancestors buried there. The monument lies 00 miles from Washington on US Route 1 and Virginia Route 3. The Washington family settled at Wakefield in 1665, with Col John Washington arriving in 1656 and the family maintaining possession for eight generations over 264 years.
