Harry H. Rieck announces progress on the Caroline Health Center building in Denton Maryland. He says completion by late spring or early May is possible and urges residents to contribute the remaining about 1600 dollars to finish the project.
The Caroline County March of Dimes fund received about 45 dollars from a February 1 dance sponsored by the American Legion post. Legion Home near Denton is remodeled with a new kitchen and painting underway, while Caroline Unit Auxiliary installed a ten burner stove. The post has 189 paid members toward a 200 goal, aiming for 225 by July 1.
A county wide swine producers meeting will be held in the Caroline High School Vocational Agricultural room in Denton on Wednesday February 20 at 730 p m Representatives from the University of Maryland will discuss swine producers problems Everyone is invited to attend The number of hogs raised in Caroline County has increased greatly in recent years and may rise further Some farmers profit while others may lose money The meeting aims to help farmers produce pork economically and profitably
Sixteen Bethesda Grange members met at Bethesda Hall on Monday evening February 4 with guest speaker Sgt. Evelyn Sherer WAAC recruiting officer stationed in Dover who spoke on her experiences in Panama. The club discussed year long projects including quilt making dresses and renovation of Bethesda Hall.
Dr. Karl Quimby of the General Board of Missions of the Methodist Church will speak at Grace Church Tuesday evening February 19 at 7 30. This district wide service climaxes special missionary rallies with a good attendance urged.
At the Ridgely Chamber of Commerce meeting on February 6, Secretary Howard F. T. Smith of the British Embassy spoke on Britain's economy and future. Attendees included County Commissioner John W. Eveland and Denton attorneys Robert Downes and Calvert Merriken. The event honored the late King George VI. the Smiths were hosted by Edward D. Sparks.
Plans near completion for a Caroline County Historical Society meeting in the Denton High School auditorium Monday evening February 18 at 8 oclock. Architect Andrew Hepburn will present color slides of 45 Eastern Shore historical points for study and possible restoration.
Caroline county produced about 2.6 million pounds of green peas for canning and freezing in 1951. Based on state reports showing 22.22 million pounds for processing, the county accounted for roughly 12 percent of Maryland's canning peas with about 1,050 acres harvested. Three canneries in the county helped fuel a state pack near 1.2 million cases.
Scout Troop No. 165 in Denton held an Open House on February 6 to begin National Scout Week celebrating the 42nd anniversary of scouting. About 34 boys were represented with 31 present plus leaders and parents. Exhibits included stamp, coin, and train collections along with model cars and airplanes. The meeting featured games, singing of the Tri County Song, and a plan to adopt the song countywide.
Maryland and Virginia lawmakers spar over a Potomac River coastal resource plan as Virginia moves to create a joint Maryland Virginia oyster commission. Maryland officials prefer a Chesapeake Bay authority, while Maryland fights Potomac only control.
A preliminary accounting shows about 1540 dollars collected so far in Caroline county for the polio drive as of February 11. Districts report varying sums with Federalsburg leading at 604.59 and Preston at 363.69, while several chairmen have yet to file full reports and schools have not yet reported their totals.
A Social Security Administration representative will be at the Denton Court House on Monday February 18 starting at 11 a.m. Norman P. Foster of the Salisbury field office says the event helps area workers learn about Old Age and Survivors Insurance and to file applications or obtain correct information.
The public is invited to a George Washington program sponsored by Circle No 1 of the First Methodist Church in Denton. It will be held Friday February 22 at 8 p m in Fellowship Hall with a children’s musical program. Admission is one penny per year of age and refreshments will follow.
The Caroline County Firemen's Auxiliary will meet at the Marydel Firemen's Hall on Friday night February 15 at 8 p m. The gathering features a door prize and a trophy for the town with best attendance. Mrs Norris Daffin of Federalsburg presides. Mrs Wilson Cohee serves as vice-president.
A Maryland University meeting will present eight broiler strain results on growth feed use mortality feathering and flesh at the Quantico Road substation near Salisbury on February 19 at 2 p m. Speakers include Dr Morley A Jull Perry Twinfig Floyd Kerns and others with heating methods and feed effects reviewed.
Delegate John W. Logan was named to a seven member House sub committee to study the budget. The panel is holding hearings with State Department heads and will report findings and recommendations to the House before March 16.
The fifth annual Dover YMCA invitational draws a 14-team field from the Delmarva Peninsula. Games run Saturdays from February 16 to March 22 at Dover High Field House with revised officiating and prize awards for winners, runners-up, and coaches.
Caroline County invites all youths to the Call to United Christian Youth Action at First Methodist Church in Denton on Sunday evening February 17 at 8 00 p m. Rev H C Dubois of Greensboro and Rev Wilson Davis of Ridgely lead the interdenominational effort offering guidance to local youth through the United Christian Youth Movement.
William Ellis Kerns 50 of Greensboro died suddenly of a heart attack on Monday evening February 11. He lived in Greensboro 22 years, first teaching, then running an appliance store. He was son of William L. and Annie E. Wolfington Kerns of Philadelphia. Survived by wife Velma T. Kerns and three daughters Elizabeth T. Holman of Sac.
The Denton Community Club meets at the Club House Friday February 15 at 2 p.m. Hostesses are Mrs. E Paul Knotts Mrs. Fred Covey Mrs. Ethel Stevens and Mrs. Percy Bittle. Speaker Mrs. Jerome Fletcher covers Native Birds and will show a bird film.
Oscar Webb, 63, charged with first degree murder for the July 18 shotgun slaying of Ralph D. Barros near Frederica, is continued to the April term by Judge Daniel L. Herrmann. He is under observation at the Delaware State Hospital after transfer from the New Castle County Workhouse on doctor Tarumianz’s recommendation.
Denton Boy Scout Troop No. 165 won the Tri County Winter Rally held February 8 at Easton High School. Eight troops from three counties competed, with 114 Scouts and 17 leaders attending. Led by Scout Master John Witback and Asst. Scout Master Percy Scudder, Denton boys also contributed a rally song by Thomas Towers. Five contests included three legged race and fire by friction, in which 165 placed third in the three legged race.
