Winter Poultry Breeding and Care Guidelines

Extension Service guidance from Virginia Tech on breeding stock selection stresses stamina intelligence and proper physical traits in both male and female birds. Emphasizes sized, healthy eggs from good layers, careful management of breeders, and keeping males well fed to influence chick quality. Also covers winter production goals, housing separation, ventilation, feeding with high protein mash, animal protein sources, oyster shell, cod liver oil, greens, and milk supply to maximize egg yield and chick viability.
