This week the Denton firemen surpassed their monthly drive target with $945 raised by Wednesday. Encouraged by donations from Honorary members, they set a new goal of $1000 to attract more signups before the drive ends Saturday February 5.
Denton firemen faced three alarms in under three hours on Tuesday. A chimney blaze at Havel Krabill’s home sparked later fires at William Fisher’s Lincoln street residence and William Faulkner’s near Tuckahoe Station, destroying the house dairy barn and a con stable. Hay wheat and corn stock were lost. insurance coverage incomplete. Regular meeting notes two new members Scurto and Wright. January saw two fire calls, one test air raid and six ambulance calls.
A. O. H. Grier editor of the Wilmington Journal Every Event and the Wilmington Morning News was elected president of the Del Mar Va Press Association at its annual meeting in Wilmington. G. Marshall Townsend of Milford Chronicle was named vice president, and Murray Metten of the Journal Every Evening and News secretary and treasurer. Elected directors were Wallace H. White of the Salisbury Advertiser G Arthur McDaniel of the Federalsburg Times and C. E. Bray of the Easton Star Democrat.
Leon A Andrus of Queenstown filed with Annapolis for the Democratic nomination for United States Representative in the First District. A dairy farmer and publisher of Queen Anne s Record Observer he backs Senator Harry Byrd s presidential bid and argues for national interests over local grabs while criticizing New Deal politics.
Caroline Service News notes Mrs Elizabeth A Shaffer that her husband 1st Lt Donald C Shaffer has arrived safely in England. He was inducted from Caroline County into the Maryland National Guard in February 1941 and won a commission in October 1942 at Camp Lee Virginia. He is a son of Mr and Mrs Charles V Shaffer of Denton and has two brothers in the U S Army Marion Shaffer at Fort Custer Michigan and Emmett Shaffer now in Ireland.
Cpl Lloyd C Gooden, formerly of Camp Maxey Texas, writes from the Army Specialized Training Unit on the University of California campus. He reports rapid progress in his course, claims to be second highest in his class, and hopes to surpass his top roommate. He sends regards to Delmarva friends and mentions fond memories of the Eastern Shore.
In a January 9 1944 letter from Somewhere in England Private Charles Downes Perry writes to his mother Mrs C E Perry of Preston saying he is well and enjoying his time overseas though the weather is worse than at home. He notes he has visited many places and is out a lot, sending regards and asking for letters in return.
Mrs Ottilie Layton of West Denton writes to the Denton Journal on January 24 1944 thanking the newspaper for keeping her husband Cpl T William T Layton Jr informed while he serves in the U S Army in North Africa He last visited home December 10 1943 and the letter is dated January 12 1944
V Mail from Robert Calloway of Hobbs area writes from England about English soccer. He notes the pass work quality, recalls a Division All Star season against English teams, and says the unit still “in there pitching” as they await returning home.
A wartime letter from January 1944 details a move to a northern town with cold nights and many white residents. The writer mentions personal appearances by Humphrey Bogart and Joseph Calleia, sharing photos and dinners, and notes Service News feels like home. A New Year greeting wishes a return home within the year.
In Florida Lt. W Lloyd Carter of the Army Air Corps marks a year in service. He earned his wings after a March induction and December completion of flight training at Dover Airport. Now at Avon Park he flies a B 17 Flying Fortress. Carter, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Carter of Milford Delaware, is nephew to Mr. and Mrs Summers Carroll of Concord near Denton, with whom he lived while attending school in Denton. He has several brothers in service.
Barton Butler of Davidson College Davidson North Carolina enlisted in the Army Air Corps last September. He was sent to Greensboro for basic training before resuming his studies. Butler is the son of Mr. and Mrs. L Edward Butler of Denton. After graduating Caroline High School in 1942 he farmed at home until joining the service and has not yet had furlough or a visit home.
Major J Woodall Greene writes from the South Pacific to his aunt in Denton recounting a Christmas Eve in New Guinea. He mentions watching island scenery, noting bombings by 20 Japanese planes five days before, and listening to Australian radio carols from a portable set while thinking of home.
The annual inspection of Co. A of the Fifth Battalion commanded by Capt. Wilbert L. Merriken was conducted by Lieut. Andrew J. Miller of Fort George G. Meade at the armory on Monday. The company has 52 men from Caroline County. Maj. George W. Clendaniel of Denton now commands the Fifth Battalion, which covers Cecil Kent Queen Annes Caroline and Talbot Counties. Major Clendaniel attended a meeting in Elkton Monday.
Recent arrivals at Enid Army Air Field Oklahoma for the 9 week basic flying course include Aviation Cadet Maurice A Dragoo son of Mrs Nellie M Dragoo Greensboro He finished his primary flying training at Cimarron Field Oklahoma City After completing basic flight training he will proceed to another air field of Army Forces Training Command for advanced instruction.
The nominating committee selects incumbents for the Choptank Electric Cooperative officers to be elected at the March 6 annual meeting in Denton. Nominated are Russell Adkins, Herbert Ford, Walter Lankford, Harry Moore, Harry Nuttle, Harvey Pusey, and Martin Voss. Committee chair Olin Davis and others from Golt, Federalsburg, Eden, Warwick, Snow Hill, Cambridge, Ridgely, Gordova, Queen Anne, Princess Anne, and Willards participated. This marks the first year all officers are slated for reelection. The cooperative serves farmers in nine Eastern Shore counties as a Rural Electrification Administration project.
The Denton Volunteer Fire Company hosts the Caroline County Firemen's Association meeting tonight. S. T. Culver, Maryland State Firemen's Association president, and Joseph Lank of Milton, Del., speak after dinner at Grace Methodist Church. Officers to be elected at the meeting follow the dinner and program.
Denton county reports 270 buyers totaling 73 494 25 in fourth war loan bonds as of January 28 led by Federalsburg Preston Ridgely Greensboro Goldsboro Hillsboro Marydel and other towns. Total sales reach 245 000 toward a 300 000 goal.
Miss Mattie Smith of Denton chairs the local procurement committee for nurses and the Maryland Nursing Council for War Service for Caroline County. She begins enrollment and classification of more than 40 graduate registered nurses and names a Denton committee to assist. The group aims to place nurses in military service, compile a roster of graduates, support civilian care, and promote student nurse recruitment. High schools in the county receive posters, pamphlets, and library materials about United States Student nurses.
Governor Herbert R. O Conor urged that Maryland servicemen and women be treated as registered voters. In a WFRB broadcast he proposed using Armed Services membership as a waiver of standard registration, allowing qualified service members to vote if they meet age and constitutional requirements.
