Fleetwood Market Destroyed by Fire in Denton
Early Wednesday morning, December 28, the Fleetwood Building at Sixth and High Streets in Denton burned totally. Owned by Mrs. Harvey Fleetwood Sr, the store, stock, and furnishings suffered losses over $40,000, with insurance partially covering the damage. Fire crews from Denton, Ridgely, Greensboro and Hillsboro-Queen Anne battled flames from 1:15 a.m. until about 4 a.m., with no wind hindering efforts. the cause remains undetermined.

Dr. Gordon M. Cairns University of Maryland dean of agriculture is one of four men honored as Man of the Year in Service to Agriculture by Progressive Farmers magazine for 1955.
