Caroline High School mathematics students earned national recognition in the December issue of School Science and Mathematics. Eleven students from Massachusetts to California are named, including juniors Dane Lou Butler Carolyn V Cohee James F Cooper James Eveland Connie Koste Tommy Reed Connie Stoops and Fiola Wright. Additional seniors E David Mellits and juniors Richard Kerslake Henry Nuttle also earned credit for correct solutions to challenging problems.

Holt Oil Company held its annual Christmas party for 119 employees and guests from the Delmarva Peninsula at the Federalsburg Woman's Club House. Awards and gifts were handed out, seven workers received silver dollars for 25 plus years of service, and entertainment by Mel Price and his Santa Fe Rangers followed a retirement plan talk by Mr. Unger.

Denton Chamber of Commerce president Harold C Towers announced that Glee Clubs from Caroline and Lockerman High Schools will sing Christmas carols from the Courthouse Green on Wednesday December 21 and Saturday December 24 at 7:00 PM. Three out of town judges will be chosen to judge decorations next week. Homeowners are urged to keep lights on nightly. Prizes total 40 dollars in cash and a savings bond.

Denton Office Plans Full Operator Force for Christmas
Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company in Denton will staff a full operator force on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day through December 26. Long distance circuits may delay calls. Daily calls are expected to reach about 6 000 during Christmas week with reduced rates on December 23 and 26. Operators thank customers and advise calling before Christmas Eve or after December 26 and giving the party number for faster service.

Widow Laura Goldsborough Burned In Washington Apt Fire
Mrs Laura Tall Goldsborough widow of Judge T Alan Goldsborough suffered third degree burns when she apparently fell asleep smoking in her Washington apartment. A passerby Mrs T Ti Falorsi 66 alerted rescuers and she was rushed to Emergency Hospital in satisfactory condition. Her husband served in Congress for 18 years and as federal judge he attracted national attention for hefty fines against John L Lewis and the United Mine Workers in 1946 and 1948.

Calvert Merriken Found Shot in Denton Home
Calvert C. Merriken prominent Caroline County lawyer and businessman was found shot at his Second Street home in Denton on Wednesday December 21 shortly after noon. He died at Memorial Hospital within hours. Survived by wife Jessie Stinson and two sons Calvert Jr and William Merriken. A former member of the House of Delegates, funeral plans were incomplete.

Denton Cub Scout Pack 265 held its annual Christmas Party December 16 at First Methodist Church. Cub Master Darling and Den Chief Bobby Price led opening exercises while six dens displayed tree ornaments. The group sang carols, piano solos by Ormond Andrew Jr. and awards were presented to many Cubs including Bear Ronald Danley Lion Buddy Pine and Gold Arrow Glen Wise among others. Stripes went to Bobby Downes Emory Walston and Keeper of the Buckskin to Tommy Fleetwood Wayne Wise John Heinel and Wayne Wise.

William Tengerman of Denton won the state Spencer Chemical Company speaking contest. His speech, The Goal of My Soil Conservation District, was forwarded to League City for regional and national judging. Runner up was Henry Brandt of Ridgely and third place went to Carl Rieck of Preston. This marks the third straight year a state winner came from Caroline County.

V. F. W. Hosts Christmas Party For Children At Post Home
