Denton Plans New Frozen Foods Locker Plant
The city will gain a Frozen Foods Storage Locker plant on Greensboro road in the former Rue Publishing Co. building operated by G. H. Rue. The OPA requires 180 signatures and a year of rent from meat, poultry, fruit and vegetable growers to qualify for priority equipment purchase, with at least 310 lockers installed for townspeople to use. Signatures and payments speed operation. the plant will offer quick freezing, aging, and storage for holidays.

Maryland sent 24 delegates led by Bessie Spafford and Kathryn Rittenhouse to Chicago for the 23rd National 4-H Club Congress from December 1 to 8. National winners included Hedwig Heinermann in Dairy Foods and Margaret Roderick and Lois Mullinix in Clothing and Stile Revue. Delegates gathered with 46 states and international participants to discuss wartime 4-H progress and postwar plans.

Ferry Traffic Rises Sharply in November 1944
A 17.12 percent rise in automobile traffic on the Matapeake-Sandy Point ferry was reported for November 1944 compared to November 1943 by ferry manager B. Frank Sherman. Automobiles totaled 17,304 versus 14,775. trucks crossed 3,427 versus 3,115. passengers excluding drivers grew from 38,562 to 43,449.

Christmas Seals Aid Maryland Tuberculosis Fight
The Maryland Tuberculosis Association uses Christmas Seals to fund a modern program with free clinics X rays tuberculin testing medical research prevention facilities rehabilitation and health education. Dr Samuel Wolman notes f ight against tuberculosis hinges on locating cases through clinics and the state health department with exams by TB specialists and beds for care. The Miracle House at Claiborne symbolizes prevention through building up children exposed to TB. The group stresses education to employers and the public to promote hiring cured individuals and widespread informational outreach via lectures pamphlets movies radio and press. Special focus targets reducing Negro TB deaths, with an Institute for Negro physicians and teachers and annual Negro college essay contests. Caroline County has surpassed its $325 000 quota in the Sixth War Loan campaign. Incomplete returns show Denton Greensboro Ridgely Hillsboro and Marydel subscribing their quotas. About $400 000 has been subscribed to date in Caroline County. In Denton the B Schwanda Company bought bonds totaling $50 900 as four individuals invested $10 000.

Walter Long Victim of Dread Tularemia
A case of tularemia is reported in Denton by Dr. E Paul Knotts. Walter Avery Long, 17, developed the disease after dressing rabbits, the infection starting from a cut on his finger. He is ill at his mother Mrs James Lerch’s Denton home.

First German Will Filed in Local Court
The first will written in German to be officially recorded in Caroline county was that of Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Fuchs of Preston. She filed December 6, 1937 to revoke a prior will from October 1, 1937. The German copy was kept, the English copy destroyed or missing. Mrs. Fuchs died September 20, 1944, leaving two sons and an estate valued at $12,000. Conrad Fuchs was appointed administrator. Witnesses were Harry H. Rieck, George Fuchs and Mike Seaman.

W C T U President Explains Crusade at Denton Institute
Miss Bertha H. Tyson of Baltimore, president of the Maryland Woman's Christian Temperance Union, outlined the crusade at a Tri-County union institute in First Methodist Church Denton. She said the WCTU aims for 70,000 Loyal Temperance Legion members and 50,000 abstinence pledges, noting soldiers signing the pledge despite some drinking. Tyson urged temperance as a path to strong bodies and safe highways, and described a financed temperance education program seeking $1,000,000. Maryland has 4,000 members and a $15,000 quota and was among the first to raise its allotment.
