At its regular monthly meeting on Friday evening the fire company elected officers for the coming year. President Walter B. Palmer Jr., Vice-president Robert Taylor, Treasurer Thomas F. Baynard, Secretary Theodore Manlove, Assistant Secretary Harry M. Allston, Trustees Wm. Finn, Joseph Collins, Paul Singer, Charles T. Baker, M. Kemp Newnam Jr. Emory F. Walston was re elected chief. J H Raughley Dies Former Harrington Mayor 82
James Harry Raughley longtime Harrington resident and former mayor dies at home at 48 Commerce St after a months long illness. A Democrat he served as mayor 1940 to 1946 and was on the Levy Court and General Assembly. Survived by a sister, four brothers, nieces and nephews. Funeral 1:30 p m Saturday at Trinity Methodist Church with interment in Denton Cemetery.

Willoughby Progressive Jeweler Opens In Willits California
Grover T Willoughby opens a modern jewelry store in Willits with a watch maker bench in 1948. He receives twenty two flower baskets from local merchants and friends at grand opening. Grover, his wife Mrs Willoughby and daughters Sharon and Gail pictured. Grover, a 1937 Caroline High School graduate, served in the Navy starting 1939 and later moved from San Francisco to Willits in Northern California Gateway to the Redwoods.

Incarcerated at Caroline County Jail Vernon Burkindine 18 of Greensboro was charged with forgery for cashing two checks signed C Bowman after two complaint witnesses provided information. Officer Francis Roberts led the investigation with Trooper E C Myers assisting. Additional dispatch notes report a separate Saturday night stabbing attempt at Logan’s Cannery Henderson ending in suspended jail sentences for Dolphus Brown of Lumbarton NC and C B Boyden of Henderson. Brown faced assault and battery charges while Boyden faced disturbing the peace.

Denton National Bank mailed club checks to 595 members totaling 65,773.50 dollars. Eastern Bay Line To Cease Runs Dec 31
The Eastern Bay ferry between Romancoke and Claiborne will stop operations at year end by order of the Maryland State Roads Commission. The service, long a money loser, closed after the Chesapeake Bay Bridge opened, with tolls far below monthly costs. Only one ferry now runs between the Eastern Shore points, conducting about 16 one way trips daily.

A window shattered at Fleetwood Hardware and the Firestone store garage lock was broken across the street while Koenig’s Hardware had a backyard window broken. Fugitives Captured Near Federalsburg After Jail Break
Three Sussex Jail escapees Charles Crawford Elwood Willin and George W Moore all of Federalsburg plus a fourth Oliver Boone were captured within 18 hours after the break near Georgetown Del The men surrendered without a fight as troopers surrounded a tenant house south of Federalsburg They were taken to Denton then Salisbury for the night Extradition proceedings were to follow Delaware authorities said Boone a life term murder defendant was captured near Atlanta and found with a home made stiletto The escape occurred when guards cut bars with hacksaws and the jail car was stolen by the fugitives
