Mrs Julia Smith Lane Retires From C P Telephone

Mrs Julia Smith Lane of 9 N Fourth Street Denton retires after 30 years with The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company. She began as a temporary operator July 10 1929, became chief operator in 1936 for 19 years, then returned to the switchboard before retirement. A Roosevelt visit highlighted her career.

High yield clover touted as Chesapeake new variety

Joseph Bacsak of Denton praises clover Chesapeake as a high yielding red clover. The University of Maryland released it for statewide use, noting persistence and weed suppression. Welfare Defrauder Convicted In Maryland Case

Robert Collins of near Denton was found guilty of defrauding the Caro line County Welfare Board for two years. He received 4 months with repayment of $10 weekly, after overpayments totaling $2,157 and about $3,344 from Welfare plus $1,000 from the unemployment board. Ernest Lankford from Denton was convicted of defrauding the Department of Employment Security of $102 and faces 60 days jail if unpaid. George Holdis jailed for 4 months on assault and concealed weapon charges after stabbing a victim with a switch blade. Thomas Madison got 60 days for assault on Delores Johnson. a second assault charge on Linwood Phillips was dropped. Leona DeBose paid a $20 fine for assault.

Green Door Raid Nets Three Arrested in Caroline County

Maryland State Police raided the Green Door, a rural farm site off Double Hills Road, under a circuit court search warrant. Three people Roland Statum, Edna Statum and Monroe Ward Griffith were arrested. film equipment and paraphernalia were seized. all were held on bond with additional charges.

Maryland Fire Service Extension Short Course Opens

About 400 volunteer firemen from Maryland's 23 counties will attend the University of Maryland four day session starting September 1. The program uses 20 000 gallons of fuel oil to create fires on a 10 acre training area. Participants learn to handle fuel oil fires gas mask drills and obstacle course navigation in a smoke filled building. The training emphasizes proper clothing and safety to reduce injuries and is offered free as a public service.

Roger L. Adams of Denton lost control on a left curve on Sixth Street early Sunday, struck a tree after swerving to avoid a driveway vehicle. Officer Earl Ramsey charged him with reckless driving. Adams was found guilty and fined $10.75. Damage estimated at $1,000.

Old Union Church to Hold 170th Anniversary Celebration

Old Union Methodist Church near Blackbird Delaware plans a September 13 anniversary day with services at 10 30 and 11 00 a m and 2 00 p m officiated by Rev Larry S Renner TownsEnd. MCMP Installs Milking Tanks at Timonium Fair

Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers installs two 400 gallon tanks at Timonium Fair to hold and cool milk from exhibition cows from August 31 to September 12. The effort, begun last year with the Maryland Purebred Dairy Cattle Association, channels proceeds from milk no longer fit for sale to Breeders Association.
