New South School Bids Accepted On Tuesday

Three bids for the projected New South High School were accepted Tuesday afternoon, led by Hallock Construction Co. at 770,890. Cambridge firm Brohawn & Brothers followed at 779,363 and DeShields of Salisbury at 782,900. No contract awarded yet as county bonds await sale and approval.

Denton Girl Nets Second In Maryland 4-H Public Speaking

Sarah Lane of Denton placed second in the Maryland 4-H Public Speaking contest at the University of Maryland after winning her county spring title and district honors for Caroline Kent Dorchester Queen Annes and Talbot Counties. She belongs to the Concord Chipmunks Senior 4-H Club. Also named Maryland All Stars from Caroline were Claire Downs and Joseph Voshell among 39 new members overall including 16 from the Eastern Shore. other recipients include Doris Bolton Walton Mason Cecil Fletcher Hall Susan Keens Ginger Eliott Nancy West Jane Elizabeth Goodhand Bryan Moore Barbara French Joyce Andrew Billy Stephens Roberta Kelly Wesley Pilchard Rita Carole Ward.

Caroline Health Programs Studied by County Group

The Caroline County Health Association and County Health Department will evaluate health programs to improve services. Frank D. Zeigler Jr. notes the association is also running its annual membership drive to fund loan closet items. Dues paid by Sept. 20 authorize voting at the October 20 Denton Health Center meeting.

Southern States members hear growth projections for farming

Denton area members heard from Jack McHugh of Southern States Cooperative about farm markets expanding with rising national population. By 1975 USDA projects sharp gains in poultry red meat milk eggs fruits and vegetables, prompting a reorganization to 16 regions and enhanced member services to boost bargaining power. Wayne Geisel Sidney Collins were elected to the local board. Mrs. Roland Fountain and Mrs. Walter Steward named to the Farm Home Advisory Committee. John J. Jarrell reported on local operations as H. H. Nuttle presided.

Queen Elizabeth views antique rifles in Bisley Centenary show

U S Navy Lt Omar Robert H Taylor displays muzzle loading rifles to Queen Elizabeth II during the Bisley Centenary event. He explains loading steps while comparing 1860 era arms with modern NATO weapons. Taylor, a Maryland native, chairs the M L A and plans to command U S S Recovery after returning home in October.

Voss Family Reunion Held On Sunday August 14th

The Voss family held its 13th reunion at Wheeler's Park near Harrington on Sunday August 14. About sixty relatives and visitors gathered for a picnic and to hear family updates. Stanley Wyatt led the informal meeting and 1961 officers were elected: Theodore Layton president, Charles Stevenson vice president, Annie Voss secretary, Evelyn Stevenson treasurer. Evelyn Stevenson’s family scroll graph showing the 1846 descent of James and Josephine Curry Voss drew much interest. Attendees hoped for another reunion in 1961 and left grateful for the gathering.

Dates Set For Voter Registration At Court House

Voter registration dates announced with a special session at the Court House on September 10 and additional registrations in eight districts on September 13 and 20. The Saturday session runs 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. while Tuesday hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. September 27 is revision day to update records.

Denton Bank Elects H Coursey Edwards Director

H Coursey Edwards a Ridgely farmer has been elected a director of the Peoples Bank of Denton to fill the unexpired term of William Croll who has resigned due to poor health. Croll the bank's oldest director since 1913. Edwards heads the Caroline County Farm Bureau and chairs the Farm Products Show Committee while serving on the Economic Development Commission.

MCMP Installs Milk Tanks At Timonium

The Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers installs bulk milk tanks at Timonium Fair Grounds for the third year to save prize dairy cows milk from exhibition. A 400 and a 600 gallon tank are being installed to improve handling. milk will be hauled to a manufacturing plant for cash return rather than wasted. The Timonium Fair runs August 29 to September 10 with public tours of the facilities.

Caroline County Schools Set to Open September 6 1960

The 1960 61 school year officially opens Tuesday September 6 at 9 00 a m. Teachers report September 1 and 2 to prepare. Principals meet August 29 at North Carolina High School to receive materials. A record enrollment is expected with more than 4500 students across ten schools. Kindergarten pupils total 59 and 196 teachers have been employed.

Edwards Wins 4 H Tractor Contest At Farm Show

Richard Edwards of Ridgely won the Caroline County 4 H Tractor Operators Contest held Saturday August 20 at North Caroline High School during the Farm Products Show. Edwards will represent Caroline County at the Maryland State Fair in Timonium on September 2. Other participants and placings listed from Samuel Harrison to James Hughes with tractors supplied by Preston Motor Co R H Stafford and Pete Shaffer. Program aims to teach safe efficient tractor operation. fifty three 4 H members enrolled. local leaders and University of Maryland Extension Service oversaw event.

Historical Society Plans Fall Dinner At Greensboro

Caroline County Historical Society president Harry H. Rieck plans the annual fall colonial dinner in Greensboro for October 5. A directors meeting September 6 will set the menu and program. The North Carolina High School Farm Show highlighted county talent with many junior exhibitors.
