Redden Named Delegate To Conference In Biloxi

Maryland Senator Layman J. Redden of Denton will attend the Southern Regional Education Board Legislative Work Conference in Biloxi Mississippi from August 31 to September 2. He will join other state lawmakers to study higher education financing amid expanding enrollments and discuss statewide planning surveys self evaluation and regional cooperation with observers from West Virginia. The Maryland delegation also includes Perry O. Wilkinson Hyattsville Philip H. Goodman Baltimore S. Fenton Harris Frederick and James B. Monroe Waldorf.

Brown-Liden Family Holds Annual Reunion

The Brown-Liden family reunion met Sunday Aug 14 near Bridgeville at Dublin Hill Community Hall. President W Wayford Brown led the business meeting with officers elected: Hazel Brown Taylor Houston as president Ruth Brown Russell Bridgeville as vice president W Covey Brown Denton as secretary Ruth Russell historian Ernest Brown assistant historian. Oldest woman Sallie Brown and oldest man Gootee Stevens received gifts. Penny Taylor five weeks daughter of Harry and Katherine Taylor Centreville youngest attendee. Next reunion planned for August 1956 at Harrington Century Club house hosted by Edward Brown Atlantic City. Weather forecast included cool showers Aug 26–29 and fair through Sept 1.

Southern States Group To Hold Farm Talent Round-Up Contest

The Southern States Farmers Supply Cooperative and Farm Home Advisory Committee will host a Farm Talent Round-Up for amateurs 12 and older at Caroline High School in Denton on September 20 1955. Entrants may win a three day trip to New York City and $100. Eligibility restrictions apply for local and district acts, with entry details via Frank Zeigler Jr and Earl Isaacs Jr.

Suitor Kills Couple In Rage In Centreville Area

A 39 year old oyster shucker is suspected of fatally shooting his girlfriend Elizabeth Warner and her former boyfriend Albert Melvin Smith in a rage over a suspected rival. Webb, known also as Robert Powell Corp, allegedly shot Warner in the arm and then twice more, and killed Smith at close range as he hunted him behind a building. Police say the killings occurred between 9 and 9:30 pm Saturday, with Warner finding the body later at the front yard gate and her father discovering the second body at midnight. Webb is in custody. Girl Scout Drive Set for August To September

The Peninsula Girl Scout Council announces a community drive from Sunday August 28 through September 10 with a $1500 goal. Denton area chairman Charles V Moore says solicitors will visit homes and businesses. Sections will support the Community Club Lions Club Rotary Club and Girl Scout Committee Women under Mrs Chas V Moore and others.

Caroline County 4-H'ers At Club Week Program

Caroline County 4 H'ers joined about 1200 youths for State 4 H Club Week August 8 13 on the University of Maryland campus now in its 33rd year. Maryland Land Week Observed October 9 15 Across State

Maryland marks its sixth annual Land Week from October 9 to 15. Edward F. Holter, state chairman, notes observance promotes soil conservation to farmers and non-farmers alike. The program highlights four Western Maryland counties Frederick Garrett Allegany and Washington with tours, a land judging contest and youth activities for Future Farmers of America and 4-H.

Denton Community Club Opens Season Sept 9th

The Denton Community Club will start its fall program on September 9 with a 1 p.m. luncheon. Maryland Federation of Women's Clubs president Mrs. William A. Douglas of Cumberland will give the address, joined by state parliamentarian Mrs. Thomas W. Fleming of St. Michaels and district president Mrs. Philip A. Creath of Pocomoke City. A musical program directed by Mrs. G. H. Rue will be presented, and club president Mrs. E. Alan Armstrong will preside for the first time since her spring election.

Parents Of First Grade Children To Meet Sept. 1st

The Denton Parent-Teachers Association sponsors a meeting of parents of incoming first grade students at Caroline High School on Thursday September 1 at 8 p.m. Beatrice Williams Supervisor of Elementary Schools will give a presentation followed by discussion.

Maryland Farm Queen To Be Chosen At State Fair

Twenty two counties will be represented at Timonium as contest ants compete for the Maryland Farm Queen title. Caroline County’s Peg gy Crouse, 17, of Denton, is among entrants with plans in home economics and 4 H work. Radio Farm Director Conway Robinson will MC the program with judges from the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, B and O Railroad, and Farm Bureau Insurance. A luncheon precedes the event and the winner receives a top dress from a Maryland Institute designer with runners up also slated for dress awards.

Welfare Costs Decline For Fourth Month In A Row

Maryland reduced public assistance costs for July to 454 196 dollars, down 40049 from March’s 494 245 peak. The figure stays well under the General Assembly quota of 486 986. A 32790 saved can boost quotas for the year’s remaining eleven months. a 500000 emergency fund remains possible with State Board of Public Works approval.

Hughes Appointed County Red Cross Drive Chairman For '55

Harry R. Hughes of Denton is named Caroline County Chairman for the Boy Scout Finance Campaign to raise 179000 for the 1956 Del Mar Va Council budget. The drive launches October 25 in over 100 Peninsula communities, with funds from United Fund and community chests across 14 counties. The council serves 110 communities and aims to reach 13000 registered boys by year end. The budget was set after a March planning conference with 150 volunteers.
