Dairymen Warned of Silage Nitrogen Dangers
In Caroline County an extension note warns dairymen that silage from nitrogen-rich corn can produce dangerous silo gas and nitrate poisoning. Dry weather worsens risk, with symptoms delayed by days. safe practices include ventilating silos, delaying opening six to eight weeks, gradual introduction of forage, and high vitamin A in rations. An August meeting at North Caroline High School offers guidance on weed control and fertility for corn and soybeans, plus farm fellowship. Also advised: remove volunteer corn from soybean fields before harvest to prevent kernel contamination and processing problems.
