Unemployment rises in May to 4.4 million amid wage law debate

The Department of Labor reports unemployment climbed by 1 million to 4.4 million in May and June, with teenagers and adults rising more than seasonal. About 1.6 million unemployed in June were teens, roughly 35 percent of the total, while 3.7 million teenage boys were employed, many in sales or service. The piece argues that extending the federal wage hour law to retail could worsen unemployment, harming those the measure aims to help. It also lists community notices and personal updates about local residents and events.

Where the blame belongs on living costs in the 1950s

An analysis argues that from 1950 to 1959 gasoline prices rose only 5.5 percent while the overall commodity index jumped 21 percent due to sharp tax increases. By 1959 taxes averaged 10.12 cents per gallon, nearly half the pump price, so drivers should blame government rather than fuel costs and urge state and county officials to respond.
