Water supply wields fate of big cities in droughts
Droughts in 1949 New York and 1947 48 California test two iconic systems. New York relies on Croton water and a near 100 mile aqueduct from Schoharie and Esopus, with 1956 plans to add upper Delaware storage. Los Angeles depends on Owens River water channeled via a 238 mile aqueduct, and the Parker Dam powerfully expanding its reserve for 12 neighboring cities.

Brush Cleaning Hints for Various Finishes
Clean brushes while soft using the thinner matching the product. Use turpentine then naptha or mineral spirits for oil based finishes such as paint enamel or varnish. Alcohol is needed for brushes used with shellac or alcohol stain. For lacquers use lacquer thinner, preferably from the same manufacturer as the lacquer.
Repelling Bats From Attic Colonies
Bats are harmless and helpful by eating insects but a colony in an attic is objectionable. Seal all openings except one, leave it open until about half an hour after dark, then seal the last entrance as the bats go out for food.
Ewe Care During Lambing Time
Breeding ewes require attention during lambing, especially in cold weather. They need dry well ventilated shelter. First lambs need more attention than older ewes. The flock owner must be on duty at night and day to insure a high lamb crop.
