One Year Farm Leases Seen As Maryland Problem
A Maryland study finds 9,493 tenant farms, nearly a quarter of state farms, mostly on one-year leases. University of Maryland economist Luther Buhanan says this harms landlords, tenants, and farm longevity. Longer leases or automatic renewals could foster long term farming, security, and improved income, with tenants more likely to invest in soil, pastures, and equity. The Agricultural Economics Dept offers model lease forms for landlords and tenants to use or adapt.
