Summer enrollment at University of Maryland College Park stands at 3814 on campus, up from 3804 last year, with total on campus and off campus registrations nearing 4927. Off campus figures vary by term, and final 1959 totals reached 5374.
A 2600 pound Chandler and Price press valued at about 500 dollars is being shipped to the Congo for Rev. James Stevenson. Harmony and Grove Methodist Church members arranged the transfer after dismantling and reassembling the press in Harmony and packing it for the Methodist Board of Missions in New York. The Heidelberg Printing Press Co. supplied the press after securing it from a Cambridge firm.
North Caroline High School Band schedules performances at the Jousting Tournament on Sunday August 7 at 1 pm. Sponsored by Hillsboro Queen Anne Lions Club the event is at Queen Anne Athletic Field. The band also plans two concerts at the Caroline County Farm and Home Show on August 18 and 19 at 7 30 pm and will appear in the Marydel firemen’s parade on August 31 at 7 pm.
Revel Craft Boat Company pledges further expansion of its Denton facility after opening a second plant. Malcolm Melvin, Denton native and VP, credits local support and strong labor cooperation as proof the move was sound. The Anne Arundel main plant will supply the Denton operation, with the 1986 model season prompting growth.
The oldest family reunion in the area, held every five years, gathers at Bethel Methodist Church near Federalsburg on Saturday September 3. The Davis Noble Kinder reunion began in 1885 led by Dr. Jake Noble and members of Bethel Church. Fred B. Noble of Jacksonville Florida will speak, a Florida Bar member and former Methodist Church Judicial Council member who has taught Sunday School 46 years in Snyder Memorial Methodist Church.
The State Health Department urges immunization beginning at two months to protect against whooping cough diphtheria tetanus and polio. A three dose series is given 4 weeks apart with a fourth 7 to 12 months later and a fifth dose at age five. Children over five who had baby injections should receive two polio doses monthly apart followed by a third after 7 to 12 months. Caroline County Health Department will follow this schedule.
The 6th Annual Knights Jousting Tournament sponsored by the Hillsboro Queen Anne Lions Club will take place at the Queen Anne Athletic Field on Sunday August 7 at 1 p m Congressman Thomas E Johnson will deliver the charge to the Knights and Senator Robert P Dean will give the coronation address A dance follows at Centreville Armory on Friday September 2 at 9 p m William L Dudley Queen Anne is tournament committee chair promising a full program and ample prizes
Barracks 101 of World War I Veterans will meet on Sunday, Aug. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Legion Home near Denton. All members and interested friends are welcome.
Mrs Charles P Merrick Jr of Denton is named No 1 recruiter of women voters for the Democratic Party in Caroline County with duties as chair of women’s activities for the coming election. Campaign chairman Charles E Hadaway announced the appointment and urged active Democratic women to support and participate in the campaign.
The Paswater family held a reunion at Mrs. J. Earl Smith’s home near Chestertown on Sunday July 31 1960. A picnic lunch featured country ham fried chicken ice cream and cake. Attendees included numerous Paswater relatives from Wilmington Millington Grasonville Ridgely and surrounding areas, with plans for next year at Sonny Jones’s home in Millington.
Twenty five ten year old juniors enjoy a week at Camp Mardela near Denton. Deans Rev Galen Crist and Mrs Crist of Elkton lead with Rev Walter Mahan and others assisting. Mentions Ecuador mission slides and camp staff. Camp closes Saturday. next week 11 year olds arrive for another session.
Maryland fruit and vegetables fill the New Baltimore Wholesale Produce Market in a nightly, fast-paced show on the docks. About 1,100 trucks and 309 autos bring roughly 3,000 people to market as Maryland peppers, tomatoes, corn, cantaloupes, beans, spuds and squash are stacked for quick sales. Market manager Bob Martin says the market is near peak Maryland grown produce with lighting enhancing sale prices. buyers arrive around midnight and deals close by 3 am. Route 10 access and radar traffic control help prevent truck pileups, and the six hour peak sees vast movement of high quality food through the market each night.
Congressman Johnson reviews fiscal year 1960 results showing a $1.1 billion surplus after Congress trimmed 17 appropriation bills by about $683 million and new obligational authority by roughly $700 million. Revenue fell short of the $81.6 billion estimate, while debt rose to about $287 billion.
Francis L. Holsinger, former Easton High School principal, was appointed to lead North Caroline High School replacing Frank Gerhardt. Acting superintendent Fred Asilton confirmed by telephone with Wilbur Hoppengardner vacationing on the West Coast. Holsinger, a long-time Caroline County educator, has held posts in Preston and Federalsburg and earned degrees from Columbia, Maryland, and Delaware. He and wife Dorothea Andrews have two children and plan to move to Denton.
The Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police will sponsor the 10th Camp Barnes Stock Car Race on August 13 at Harrington Fair Grounds Delaware. Proceeds benefit Camp Barnes and its new girls camp, aiding over 600 youths with two weeks free camp life. Tickets cost 1.50 general 2.00 reserved and are selling fast.
