Maryland entomologists report the face fly as a new livestock pest affecting beef and dairy cattle horses and sheep. The fly irritates around eyes nose and mouth reducing growth and production while acting as a potential disease carrier. It lays eggs in fresh manure and maggots develop in soil. Control options include registered USDA compounds with pyrethrin and piperonyl butoxide plus mineral oil, or pyrethrum sprays for dairy cattle with wiped applications.

State plant pathologist Dr. L O Weaver notes fire blight has been prevalent since late May in apples pears and some ornamentals. The disease begins with blossom blight and spreads to spurs leaves and fruit via bacteria carried by insects or rain. Dormant pruning advised with cuts made at least an inch below dead bark while no disinfection required in winter.
