Rieck Heads Caroline County Historical Society For60

Harry H. Rieck elected president of the Caroline County Historical Society at Ridgelys annual dinner. He pledged to grow membership toward 500 and expand services as past president Judge J DeWeese Carter, Denton, noted membership more than doubled during his term.

Daffin Mfg. Co. Merges With Minn. Firm

Daffin Manufacturing Co of Lancaster Pa and Superior Separator Co of Hopkins Minn merge to form Daffin Corporation subject to stockholders ratification. Daffin will chair the board Pierson president and Watts financial VP. The combined group, a leader in mobile feed mills and related equipment, plans continued operations at current plants and expects faster growth.

Boat Races Set for Sunday May 1 at Denton

Four boat clubs will sanction races at 1 p m Sunday May 1 at Denton on the Severn River and Choptank River. Open motor races 10 h p and up headline the program with Bo Bo Too Gambler and another unnamed boat among top features. Six races planned with first to third place trophies, two races per club, points toward season trophies. All local owners and enthusiasts urged to attend.

District 4-H Club Public Speaking Contest Winners

Two Caroline County 4-H members earned honors Friday night April 22. Sarah Lane won first place in the girls division and will advance to the State Contest during 4-H Club Week at the University of Maryland August 8 to 13. Elrick Quillen took second in the boys division.

Soil Conservation Supervisors Meet at Caroline District

The Caroline County Soil Conservation District held its regular monthly meeting on April 19 at the Brick Hotel in Denton. All but one supervisor, Chris Nagel of Federalsburg, attended. H Coursey Edwards, a farmer from Ridgely and president of the Caroline County Farm Bureau, was welcomed as a new board member, replacing W S Carroll. Carroll, the board's last original member elected in 1942, was honored for eighteen years of service. Edward Kile, State Conservalist, explained supervisor duties. Carroll thanked the board and pledged continued cooperation.

Civil Defense Exercise Planned for May Third in Caroline

Civil Defense Director John S Legates announced the National Operation Alert will start at 2 P M EDT on May 3 in Maryland DC area and adjacent states. Siren alerts, Conelrad broadcasts, and a Take Cover signal will guide drills with Denton county control center active 1 PM to 5 PM May 3 to May 9.

Denton Secures Site For New Postoffice

Mayor George W. Beck Sr says Denton has secured a site for a new post office through a four way land transfer. The McDaniel property at Market and Fifth Streets and an adjoining Fifth Street lot owned by William B Stockley Sr are involved. The county returns part of the courthouse green and provides street and second street portions for a municipal parking area. Mrs Mary Breeding’s home on Market Street is included to be vacated for Mrs Geo A McDaniel.

Pinewood Derby Finals Held in Cambridge Winners Named

More than 250 spectators watched the Choptank District Pinewood Derby Finals at the American Legion Home in Cambridge last Friday night April 22. Eighteen pine wood cars by Cub Scouts and Dads from ten packs competed for top honors with Joe Wastler Pack 265 Denton first Tommy Ruark Pack 162 Cambridge second Bert Stewart Pack 147 St Michaels third Randy Willis Pack 162 Cambridge fourth Hal Stevens Pack 167 Hurlock recognized.

Red Cross Swimming Classes Announced in Caroline County

Caroline County Chapter of the American Red Cross schedules a single summer session July 5 to 26 with three classes at Federalsburg Lake Linchester Lake Preston and Nagel's Pond Harmony. Registration is first come first served through May 28 and limited to first grade pupils whose parents approve. Volunteer junior or senior lifesavers requested by calling Denton 222.

Death of Rev Dr Walter E Gunby at 81 in Cambridge Md

The Rev Dr Walter E Gunby 81 longtime Methodist Church administrator in Wilmington and Dover districts died last week at his home 112 Glenburn Ave Cambridge Md He served as Wilmington superintendent during the 1939 Methodist merger and retired in 1944 after pastoring Easton He is survived by his son Dr Walter E Gunby Jr and another son Olin B Gunby five grandchildren and a brother Charles Gunby Services were Friday at Thomas Funeral Home Cambridge with burial at Evergreen Cemetery Berlin

Week of State Trooper Activity And Local Police Actions

The State Police report for the past week details arrests of juveniles for possession of alcoholic beverages on April 22 near Denton Route 404 and on April 24 at Ridgely. A later April 25 court fined a juvenile $23.50. A break in at Lockerman High School with missing food was under investigation. Denton police logged disorderly conduct cases on April 23 leading to guilty verdicts and fines, plus three men arrested and fined $18.50 each on April 25 and sent to jail by default for drunkenness and disorderly conduct. one case includes malicious destruction of property appeal to the Circuit Court.

Big Woods Fire at St. Gertrude's Academy

Approximately 65 acres of woodland at St. Gertrude's Academy near Ridgely burned on Wednesday April 20. Fire reported 1:00 pm. 35 to 40 Ridgely and Greensboro fly squadron members and two Forestry patrol trucks fought the blaze for about four hours. Smoke spotted earlier at 9:30 am. Forest Fire Warden Mr Bounds urges reporting suspicious smoke early in dry spells.
