Soil Survey Aids Caroline County Tax Assessors
The Caroline County Soil Survey, near final publication by the United States Soil Conservation Service, will help land appraisers estimate agricultural land values in cooperation with University of Maryland and SCS soil scientists. A corn suitability rating system translates soil data into earning power, measuring acreage of soil groups on each farm to appraise values under average management. The method, used in Polk County Idaho since 1953 with few protests, is one of many potential uses for the survey as noted by Charles V. Layton, Work Unit Conservationist.
