Martinak Park Opens July 1 State Park near Deonton
Martinak State Park on a 100 acre tract south of Deonton will open to the public July 1. S Lawrence Hammerman chair of the Commission on Forests and Parks says the park will host a pier boat ramp picnic and camping facilities capable of serving about 2000 families each weekend. Workers have wintered to ready the park with roads parking areas and facilities nearly finished. George Martinak donated the land and further clearing will continue as funds allow.

Five Awarded Scholarships by Caroline County Education Board
The Caroline County Board of Education awarded five Senatorial scholarships to aid students beginning September 1964. Penelope Rosser of Federalsburg receives a tuition scholarship to Washington College. Joyce Gargani of Federalsburg gets a one-year St Mary’s College scholarship. A Russum Orme of Denton earns an evening of Saturday study at the Maryland Institute College of Art. David Wood of Denton receives a tuition scholarship to the University of Maryland. Craig Smith of Federalsburg secures a one-year half engineering scholarship to Johns Hopkins School of Engineering. Orme and Wood are North Caroline High School graduates, while Smith is in Johns Hopkins University freshman class.

Concert Set Brings Three Schools Together at Col Richardson High
The annual high school choral and band concert will take place Wednesday May 20 at 8 p.m. at Col Richardson High School football stadium. Over three hundred students from Lockerman North Carolina and Col Richardson will perform in vocal and instrumental groups including Patricia Johns solo and a barber shop quartet. A girls octet a dixieland band and a massed Wilhousky arrangement of The Battle Hymn of the Republic will be featured. Majorettes from Col Richardson and North Carolina will perform marching and dance routines led by co captains Chris Meredith Emily Messick and Emily Dobraski.

The Choptank District held its annual Pinewood Derby for Cub Scouts drawing 200 plus spectators. Forty cars from ten packs competed on the runway for top honors with Pack 265 Denton dominant in three top spots. Winners were Jeff Scott first Bobby Behlke second Michael Williams third John Truitt fourth and Gray son Winstead fifth. Event sponsored by Easton VFW Post 5118 and held May 9 on Glebe road with judges, starters and pit crews listed.

North Carolina High coach resigns after student incident
North Carolina High's football coach Robert S. Johnson resigns from the faculty following allegations he struck sophomore James Webb at a school baseball game. Johnson, who became head coach last fall, had previously served as an assistant under former grid mentor Ed Payne. An 18 month old girl Tamara Michele Lewis died after being run over by her father Edward R. Lewis in the driveway of their home on Union Grove Road near Harmony.

At the May 6 Board of Education meeting Wilbur S. Hoopengardner was unanimously reelected to a third four year term as Caroline County Superintendent of Schools. The Hancock native arrived in the county on August 1 1956 after prior roles in Washington Prince George's and Baltimore counties. He is currently on a traveling seminar studying high school education innovations in Florida and California.
