Denton’s town election will be held on the fourth Monday of May instead of April under Senate Bill 483. The new commissioner will take office July 1, and the Commissioners plan to meet the first Monday each month at 8 PM. Citizens are urged to bring problems and suggestions to meetings.
The largest drainage project in Caroline county history was submitted to the county commissioners at Denton. The northwest prong of Griffith's Branch near Nichols covers 2923 acres, with 35 farmers expected to benefit and costs totaling 15436.80, to be matched by the county.
Maryland plans to realign Route 313 bypassing Greensboro and the Choptank River crossing. The new east west corridor runs one mile north of Greensboro to Boyce Mill road, about 1 068 miles, with grading drainage and reinforced concrete surfacing. A steel and concrete bridge over the Choptank River will be featured. Bids are opened by the Maryland State Roads Commission in Baltimore on April 26.
The Ladies Auxiliary of Denton Volunteer Fire Company marks its first anniversary on Friday April 22 with a turkey supper for the local Fire Company and a dance at the Armory afterward. 32 members are on the rolls with officers Pres Louise Singer V Pres Winnie Cohee Sec Virginia Rasch Treas Josephine Sharp.
A Greensboro Baptist Church program on total abstinence, organized by the WC T U, featured eight youth devotions, a narrative on foundations, and demonstrations using color ribbons to depict yearly spendings on church, education, tobacco, entertainment, alcohol, gambling, crime and law enforcement. Speakers including Dr P N Biggers and Miss Isabel Ferrick urged youth to remain abstinent, with moving pictures Liquid Lore and That Boy Joe shown and community groups urged to support the cause.
James A Wise named attorney for Provident State Bank of Preston at recent board meeting. A native of Dover and former Maryland state’s attorney for Caroline county, Wise will replace Judge J DeWeese Carter. Wise, a Denton resident since 1938, is a WWII Army veteran and son of Delaware’s late state auditor.
The Courthouse tower clock will move forward at two o'clock Sunday morning April 24. Denton residents will observe Daylight Saving Time for church and timed appointments. The P T A recommends it for schools. Commissioners of Denton and local banks have issued official notice. Business places will generally observe the change.
John W. Logan elected president at Denton Rotary Club annual officer election held at Brick Hotel. James A. Wise became vice president Francis Rogers secretary treasurer and directors J Carlton Mandrell C Percival Merrick and C L Stafford. The club now has sixty four members.
The Eastern Shore 4-H and FFA spring Fat Hog Show and Sale at Queen Anne County 4-H Club Park on April 12 drew 27 exhibitors from Caroline Talbot Queen Anne's Dorchester and Somerset counties with 97 hogs. Buyers included Cork-Hill Armour and Esskay of Baltimore City. Grand Champion Barrow, a Purebred Duroc 231 lb exhibited by Clayton Ball, bought by Esskay at 0.80 per lb. Reserve Champion Barrow, a Purebred Hampshire 192 lb, bought by Esskay at 0.45 per lb. Esskay bought 58 hogs averaging 22.74 per cwt. Armour 33 at 21.25. Cork-Hill 6 at 22.85. Top price in Baltimore was 19.50 per cwt. Prize money awarded to blue and red groups. M H Kerr judged with Boyd Whittle assisting. F M Rogers auctioneered.
Beginning Monday April 25 all Caroline county schools will open at 8:00 a m and close at 2 30 p m Eastern Standard Time The change follows a parent poll conducted by school principals receiving 1903 responses with 1428 favoring the change and 475 opposing It indicates about 75 percent support for the new hours.
Volunteer firefighters report more than $419 raised in five days toward retiring a $6,000 debt. Proceeds fund a $16,000 Hahn pumper purchased last year. Donations from 60 contributors include Henry Lee Denton, Geo Beck, Parker Stone, Caroline Hobbs Knotts, Horace Morgan, and Joseph Kahler among others.
Farmers must pay truck license fees based on size and use with $15 for two ton chassis or smaller and $22 for larger than two ton plus personal property tax. The official fee list shows $33 for 14% ton and $50 for 2 ton, but farm trucks may be exempt. Seek affidavit from county treasurer or Farm Bureau secretary and request refunds if already paid. extension to May 12 anticipated for license deadlines.
Rev William McClelland fourth bishop of Easton dies at 66 after months of illness and heart condition. Born January 22 1883 in Philadelphia he led Dorchester parishes before Maryland tenure and became Easton bishop in 1939 serving 25 years until death. Funeral at Trinity Cathedral Easton with interment at Church Creek near Cambridge.
Caroline Unit No. 29 American Legion Auxiliary hosted ward 13 at Perry Point Veterans Hospital on Palm Sunday in Club Chesapeake. Mrs L Stevens Brown led the event with donations from Denton for coffee soft drinks and home made cakes. Patients expressed gratitude for the care and for not being forgotten and the unit thanked donors. Magazines such as Readers Digest Coronet and pictorial issues are welcome for delivery to the hospital in June.
Robert Garland, 86, dies at Masonic Home in Elizabethtown Pennsylvania five days before the 1949 daylight saving time goes into effect. A longtime industrialist and daylight time advocate who helped popularize the concept during World War I and championed it on Pittsburgh city council.
The Caroline County Homemakers Council will hold a county meeting at Concord Church House on April 26 at 10:00 A.M. Guests include Mrs. Duane Lynn Mil ford Delaware Miss Venna M Kell ar Assistant Director and Mr James Shanks. A tri county meeting with Talbot Caroline and Dorchester is set for Cambridge Armory on May 3. The Caroline 4-H Federation meets May 14 at Concord Church House with exhibits style show and recreation led by Stanley Sutton.
