The Denton Volunteer Fire Company launches its Sixth Annual Membership Drive from April 15 to May 15, with a goal of $6,000 to pay debt from a new engine and higher yearly expenditures. Donations accepted in person at Butler's Barber Shop or Stafford's Market on Market Street. Committee chaired by C L Stafford. Edward H Covell serves as president.

Redden Named Counsel for Denton Bank in Maryland
The Board of Directors of the Peoples Bank of Denton Maryland appointed Layman J Redden of Denton as their counsel to fill the vacancy caused by J DeWeese Carters resignation. Carter recently became Associate Judge of the Second Judicial Circuit after sixteen years as bank counsel. Redden, 44, a Caroline county native, graduated from Caroline High School Wharton School of Finance and Commerce Penn 1926 studied law at Washington and Lee University and University of Maryland graduated 1934 admitted to Maryland bar elected State's Attorney for Caroline county 1934 1946 member of several bar associations and American Law Institute committee. His father George T Redden served on the bank board from 1916 to 1928.

The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co announces Denton’s upgrade with 362000 total cost, adding a central office switchboard to six positions and 16 new toll circuits to Hillsboro Greensboro Ridgely and Easton. Community Center Planned by Easton Players
Easton plans released for a playhouse and community center to be built near Easton next spring. The project, led by Easton Players Incorporated, will use profits from My Sister Eileen, produced at Easton High School April 20 and 21, to fund construction. Archibald Coleman Rodgers drew preliminary plans for a 200-seat, three level auditorium with modern acoustics and space for games and dancing.

Good Friday Service At First Church
A three hour devotional service from noon to 3 pm is held at First Methodist Church this afternoon. Rev. John E. French leads with Mrs. Gilbert Rue as organist. Soloists include Mrs. Benjamin F. Caroline Cotillion to Present Glen Gray for Spring Dance
The Caroline Cotillion Club will host its annual Spring Dance on Easter Monday April 18 at the Denton Armory. Glen Gray and his Casa Loma orchestra from New York will play for the dances. Admission is limited to members and their out of county guests. The club, about twenty five years old with two hundred members, also hosts a Christmas Cotillion. Guest tickets are sold by the ticket committee. Over Weight Rock Fish Confiscated in Tide Water Raid
On Tuesday evening three Department of Tide Water Fisheries officers seized a truck near Poplar Neck road Hog Island. A considerable amount of over weight rock fish was confiscated. The truck and driver were taken to Denton around 9 30 P M. The driver posted a 100 bond for appearance Saturday at ten before Trial Magistrate Rickards.

License Applications Being Mailed Now
Starting Tuesday April 12 the Department of Motor Vehicles began mailing applications for license plates for all miscellaneous vehicle classes. Truck tractor and trailer applications will follow later in the week. The department will issue 1949 1950 plates for miscellaneous motor vehicles upon receiving applications.

Electric Co-op Loses Damage Suit
A Caroline County Circuit Court jury awarded Mr. and Mrs. C. Percival Merrick $800 in a suit against Choptank Electric Cooperative for cutting a grove of spruce pines on their Denton lot along the Choptank River without authorization. Testimony showed Orme had deeded the lot to the Merricks and later granted a right of way to the cooperative. experts estimated diminished property values from the unauthorized cutting. The case highlights disputed property rights and the coop’s authority in right of way work.

Welfare Board Budget Stirs Outcry At Salisbury Conference
At the regional conference in Salisbury on April 1, officials warned that the Governor and General Assembly have not funded the Welfare Board Program fully. Judge Waxter of Baltimore noted the shortfall limits local boards and could force closing up to twenty grants in May 1949, with 26 families in Caroline County awaiting aid.

Dr H A B Dunning of Baltimore native of Denton was the principal speaker at a Maryland Pharmaceutical Association regional meeting at the Brick Hotel. He spoke on plans for the Kelly memorial building in Baltimore honoring the former secretary of the American Pharmaceutical Association.
