Denton community pushes for a youth recreation center as churches and local groups meet at Caroline High School on April 9 to plan the project. Five promoters including Theodore Orme and George W.Clendaniel form a planning group to organize a community meeting, elect a board, and set committees. Next session is scheduled for April 23 at 8 pm at Caroline High School.
War veteran and author C. Bud Hutton buys a farm near Harmony from Roland Thomas. Hutton, a former 8th Air Force aerial gunner and Stars and Stripes staffer, writes authentic war memoirs. Sale was handled by O. E. Bob Roberts of E. A. Strout Realty, whose son served with Hutton in Europe. Roberts notes brisk demand and strong interest in low priced and small acreage properties in Caroline county.
Bradford Leon Morris of Denton has enlisted in the Regular Army Air Forces for three years. Announcement was made by TiSgt William D Deringer Jr of the Army Recruiting Sub-Station Easton Md. Morris is the son of Mr and Mrs Wilford Morris. He plans to learn a trade through Army specialist training schools during his three year term.
The Denton Baseball Club travels to Odessa Sunday to face the Odessa Club in an exhibition, with a return game set for April 27 in Denton. Cy Cole invites interested players to meet at the Armory at 12 15, as the club seeks strong pitching and catching to contend. The Mar Del League pushes toward its season opener May 4 with teams training and adding players, including Hartly and Felton clubs, while Camden-Wyoming and Chestertown overhaul lineups under new management.
A Queen Annes County Dairy Extension Committee and county agents plan the Third Annual Pure Bred Consign ment Sale on April 26 1947 at Pioneer Point Farms Centreville Md with 45 animals including 30 Guernseys and 15 Holsteins. consignors include Blakeford Cosquay Mt Ararat Lazy River and Rolling Knoll among others with both sexes offered and inspection notes noting higher quality than expected.
Federalsburg A s will begin spring training next week under business manager Dr W K Knotts. The club plans to mix newcomers with veterans led by slugger Ducky Detweiler who joins from Class D ball near his Eastern Shore home. Detweiler, a longtime Eastern Shore Leaguer, hopes to lift Federalsburg from the cellar with Rambert also noted as a fence busting first baseman.
The Ridgely Soccer Club travels to Washington on Sunday to face Sugar Radio in the first game of a home and home series for the State of Maryland championship. Sugar Radio beat Chesapeake City 5 to 3 to earn the right to meet Ridgely. A final game will be at Ridgely on April 27. The State Soccer Association plans its first annual presentation banquet in Baltimore on May 16 with trophies and medals awarded to state winners.
Pfc Marvin Lloyd Brown, son of Mrs Grace Brown near Denton, earned the Airborne Boots and Wings after six weeks at Fort Benning Georgia. He completed seven parachute jumps including one night jump and a dawn jump and undertook glider training with several glider flights to study glider warfare. He learned airborne communications rigging and parachute maintenance as part of the specialized course advancing Airborne trooper skills.
Six members of the Denton Volunteer Fire Company signed a contract for a new fire truck from Hahn Motor Co. of Hamburg Pennsylvania, delivery in about 200 working days. The truck seats seven, holds over 760 gallons of water and includes a portable flood lighting system, priced just under $15000. Honorary memberships were added to include F I Reynolds Theodore Postel Denton Community Club M Dorothy Jump Mr and Mrs Miles Reed and Walter B Steward bringing total to $2674.67. The fire company also set dates for the Firemen's Fair June 16 to 21 with a parade on June 17 at 7 pm.
The Ridgely Grange sponsors a county wide soil conservation meeting at Denton High School auditorium on Monday night April 21 at 8 p.m. Dr. T B Symons dean of the School of Agriculture and director of the Maryland Extension Service will be principal speaker. An informative movie follows about soil conservation efforts by the Soil Conservation Service Extension Service and farm organizations. Mr W S Carroll master of Ridgely Grange will chair. Public invited with refreshments.
Obituary notices recount the funeral of Rear Admiral George Creighton Carmine who died April 7. Services were at Bethesda Methodist Church in Preston, Maryland with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery. The procession included Coast Guard, Marines, Naval Band, and a caisson. interment followed at Fort Lincoln and cremation at Arlington. Other notices report the death of James M. Neighbors in Denton and details of subsequent burials and family survivors.
The Denton Parent-Teacher Association met at Caroline High School auditorium on Monday at 8 p m. Officers for next year were nominated by a committee. The group approved a $500 library fund request and reviewed the budget deficit of 7 17, covered by a collection. A Pre Sunrise Clinic was announced for May 2 with a health nurse in attendance. The program featured 150 primary students in songs dances and dramatization with pupils from multiple grades performing staged acts and piano solos during intermissions.
A drive by the Caroline County Agricultural Conservation Committee to sign farm plans aims to maximize benefits from 1947 practice payments. Vice-chairman J. Boone Jarrell urged Denton farmers to enroll at the county office, noting many orders remain to be filed. Plans include liming, phosphate, potash, top dressing, cover crops, green manure, small grains, drainage projects, and new permanent structures with County Committee approval.
