Dairy Herd Size Cuts Labor Per Cow On Farms
A USDA Minnesota study summarized by University of Maryland Extension Dairy man Richard G. Saacke shows labor per cow drops as herd size rises. Ten cows require about 129 hours annual per cow, while thirty cows need around 80 hours. Winter labor rises due to more cows milked, manure handling, and stored for silage. Labor-saving devices like milking parlors, silo unloaders, and in-barn feeding systems offer biggest savings.
