Barn Fire Destroys Cropp Farm Near Denton
A barn on Mr. William Cropp’s farm near Denton burned in an early Thursday morning fire of undetermined origin. The structure and contents including a truck and farming equipment were lost. insurance was incomplete. Denton Volunteer Fire Co. responded quickly, but the fire was well under way on discovery.

The junior band conducted by Earl Roberts gave a short concert featuring a trumpet solo by Ray Minner. The Caroline County Tuberculosis Association reports a good year with a 1.6 percent rise in the 1957 Seal Sale totaling 3120.20 dollars. Publicity, a mobile X ray unit, and monthly chest clinics aided case finding while 13 county residents remained in TB hospitals. The group engaged in social services, supported research, re-wired the Tuberculosis Cross, and joined the Caroline County Council of Social Agencies. Plans include expanding mailing lists and a new case finding project. Mrs. Wilbert L. Merriken serves as president.

The Caroline County 4-H Public Speaking Contest was held Wednesday night April 16 at the Denton fire hall. About 110 parents and friends attended. Shirley Cowgill Preston 4-H Club won the girls title with Ruth Ann Brindley as alternate. R Hursey Porter Jr Greensboro won the boys title with Robert Uber as alternate. County winners advance to the District 4-H Public Speaking Contest on May 20 1958 in Chestertown Md. Judges were Mrs Emory Dobson Mrs Richard Garey and Mr C V Layton. The event was led by Miss Aldine M Bullard and Mr L C Reger assisted by the Extension Service. Several juniors showed strong potential for next year.
