The April Term of the Circuit Court for Caroline County convenes next Monday morning with one civil appeal, twenty six civil trials, twelve criminal appeals, and two criminal trials on the docket. Jurors for eight districts are named, including Norman Seward and Bertha Logan in District One and Calvin Lynch in District Seven.
President Truman announces he will not seek or accept renomination, signaling a wide open Democratic race. The Jefferson Jackson Day dinner in Washington marked his exit from the re election bid, prompting Kefauver Russell and Kerr to enter the race and reshape the nomination dynamics.
The Executive Committee of the Peninsula Conference Woman's Society of Christian Service outlines dates for events. May 13 at Bethesda Methodist Salisbury hosts the Annual Conference Meeting with 330 local societies sending delegates. July 14–18 Wesley College hosts the Conference School of Missionary Education and Service with dean Mrs. Harry B Hygate and registrar Mrs. J Paul Slaybaugh. June 30–July 5 Camp Site hosts the Conference Summer School for girls led by Dean Mrs. J Mercer Terrell.
Delegate John W. Logan of Caroline County spoke at the Car oline County Business and Professional Women's Club on March 26 about the functioning of legislative committees. He described the budget process, noted casualty rates for reports, and urged group thinking from PTA and other groups to influence state lawmakers. Special guests included Miss Katharine Bratton and others from the Elkton Club. The next meeting on April 30 will elect officers and delegates to the state convention.
Preston School hosted the March 27 spelling bee to pick 5th to 8th grade county contenders for the Delmarva Contest in Salisbury on April 25. Finalists from Denton Federalsburg and Ridgely include Margaret Wooters Diane Plutschak Barbara Schrieber. Wooters won first place and Plutschak second.
Caroline County Chapter of the Izaak Walton League to meet at Caroline High School Room 23 on Wednesday April 9 at 745 p m. Agenda includes water pollution project formation, committee appointments, and review of the March state meeting at Cabin John. Members urged to sign the charter and attend.
The Christian Comrade class of First Methodist Church will meet at Mrs. Roland Lord’s home on Tuesday April 8 at 8 pm. Hostesses include Mrs. William Garey Mrs. Richard Garey Mrs. Ernest Lord and Mrs. Howard Legg. Devotions led by Mrs. Arthur Greenly. Oron F Smith to talk on Oklahoma and Easter Passion Play near Lawton. George Lowe to preside.
Maryland's 1951 canning tomato harvest reached 228000 tons worth over 8.4 million dollars, with Caroline County farming 2300 acres producing about 17500 tons valued at 645000. State acreage rose to 30000, the largest since 1947, driven by the canning industry and its heavy purchases. Roy Fortier notes tomatoes remain the state's top truck crop and the Maryland pack totaled 7582130 cases, the largest in the nation.
Civil Defense headquarters in Denton distributes home questionnaires to support the program. Girl Scouts assist and residents are urged to cooperate and leave completed forms in a pickup location. For questions call Denton 222 or mail uncalled papers to the office.
A Red Cross sponsored home nursing course under the Civil Defense program will begin in Denton soon after Easter. The volunteer instructor will be Mrs. Paul Fisher, a registered nurse. Interested persons may contact Mrs. Wilbert Merriken or Mrs. C. Robert Sutton. Sessions will be held twice weekly for three weeks with times and meeting places to be announced later.
Governor Theodore R. McKeldin designates April 4 as Arbor Day across Maryland. The proclamation notes the 80th Arbor Day anniversary and urges planting seedlings by late April, with regional variance in western Maryland. The official letter to Joseph F. Kaylor from the Governor's Office formalizes the observance.
At a Denton Fire Co auxiliary meeting on Thursday night March 27 the group scheduled a public supper for May 16 with Mrs. G Walter Downes as chairwoman. A bake sale is set for April 26.
A Harrington colt stands as the lone Delmarva candidate for this year’s Hambletonian. Federal Hanover, from Kirby & Holloway, is seen as a strong turf classic contender. Peter Long’s colt shone last season in trotting contests, placing behind Hardy Hanover and Duke of Sullwater at Bloomsburg and Reading Futurity. Bought at Harrisburg from Hanover Shoe Farms, he was trained at Harrington. Trainer S. R. Polly Sipe said Federal Hanover will race at the Kent & Sussex spring meet starting May 1 for 20 nights of pari mutuel racing.
Applications for the 1952 1953 commercial vehicle licenses are being mailed by the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles. License plates go on sale April 1 and may be displayed immediately. Applicants must insert the current plate number in the top boxes on the form to receive the validation clips.
Four Caroline County youths enlisted in March and are undergoing eleven weeks of Navy recruit training at Bainbridge Maryland. They are Jack Roland Lane Kendall Harris Kraus Preston Donald Lloyd Willey Choptank and Murray R Smith Denton. Enlisted through Chief Phelps Cambridge Branch Sub Station. Chief Phelps holds Thursdays at 2 30 pm in Denton Draft Board Office. Go Navy be a volunteer.
At the regular weekly meeting last Tuesday at the Brick Hotel the Denton Rotary Club elected officers for 1952 1953. C L Stafford was chosen president with Robert W Downes as vice president Freq G Asilton secretary treasurer and W B Palmer M A Pentz and C V Moore named directors. New officers assume duty at the first July meeting.
The Denton Community Club will meet Friday April 4 at 2 p m in the Club House. There will be an election of officers. Program chairmen should bring the year's report and members with unpaid dues should pay or contact treasurer Mrs. John H. Emerson. Hostesses include Mrs. James Clarke and others.
The Denton PTA will hold its regular monthly meeting Monday evening at 7 30 in Caroline High School. Rooms open for visits at that hour. A report on fire escape inspections at the Primary School will be presented. Forecast calls for fair cooler Friday and warmer weekend with showers Saturday.
Horse show fans on Maryland's Eastern Shore anticipate a larger series this year with cash awards for top horses and ponies across Fruitland Ridgely Easton Snow Hill and Kent Cecil shows. Competitors must enter all four events and register with the Association of Maryland Horse Shows.
The Flying Eagle Patrol of Troop 165 in Denton opened its new meeting place at Wm. Addington's home on Monday March 31. Star Scout Wm. Addington led a safety demonstration for handling guns. Members at the first meeting included Bruce Mines Richard Addington William Addington Donald Moore and Donald Morris. Assistant Scoutmaster Percy Scudder inspected the premises. The meeting closed with refreshments served by patrol members.
Miss Mary Ann Settle daughter of Mrs. Geraldine I. Jester of Denton wed Mr. Elmer W. Davis of Denton. The ceremony occurred Monday evening March 31 at the officiating minister Rev. W. L. Jump home. Attendants were Miss Naomi Thomas and Mr. Freddie Stafford. The groom serves in the U S Army and will report to Camp Lee Virginia after furlough.
Mrs. Lillian A. Harper announces the engagement of her daughter Jane to Albert P. Lamboni Jr who is on active duty with the United States Navy at Bainbridge Maryland. Jane Harper formerly of Greensboro now resides in Baltimore. The wedding is set for May 17 1952 at St Bernard's Catholic Church in Baltimore.
Mrs William Wolf chairman of the Caroline Cancer Committee announces new district chairs including Mrs Frank Anderson for Federalsburg and co ch airm en for Preston and Ridgely districts. She urges donations noting their impact on leaflets research and patient care with figures on costs and nationwide treatment.
The Caroline County school building program advances with 1947 Incentive Fund. Lockerman School gains an addition with home economics shop two classrooms and bookroom plus a new oil heating plant. Arminger Co. completed the cinder block stuccoed addition for 69 864 dollars.
