County commissioners dispute the state fire marshal power saying they will hold the jail and await state action. Oscar Leatherman reports his wife forgot to serve dinner for the first time in over 25 years as she became engrossed in a new TV program. He found her delay amusing and noted the household still kept routine despite the lapse.
Ellen Jenkins of Flora files suit in Carroll circuit court against Kenneth Jenkins asking separation from bed and board. She seeks custody of two minor children and suitable support. Married February 12, 1949, they separated September 26 of this year. Wilbur Lane represents the plaintiff.
The Carroll County TB and Health Association lists free xray and diabetic screening in Burlington Delphi Flora and Camden next week. Times vary by location with morning and afternoon slots available at each site.
Mrs Laura M Brewer 61 of Delphi dies at St Elizabeth hospital after more than a month with stroke. Born Sheldon Illinois May 19 1891 daughter of Sam and Sarah Thompson she moved to Monticello with her family. She married Harry S Brewer January 1 1914 and was active in Delphi Presbyterian church OES Rose Chapter Women of the Moose WBA and Democratic Women's Club. Survived by husband daughter Lucille Miller of Saginaw Michigan son Harold of Delphi sister Mrs Henry O Connell of Monticello two brothers preceded in death. Funeral Thursday 2 pm at Eikenberry funeral home Delphi Rev Harry Parker officiating burial in Masonic cemetery.
The Carroll County Farm Bureau will hold its annual membership meeting Friday evening October 17 at 7 30 p m in the REMC auditorium Delphi Devotions by Rev Keith Smitley of Pyrmont EUB church Election of officers for 1953 and adoption of resolutions are planned The Rural Youth Chorus will perform numbers and Gaylord Archibald will sing solos Refreshments will follow the program All farm bureau members are invited and urged to attend.
Helen Allen of Delphi has been named president of the Westminster Fellowship at Ball State Teachers College in Muncie. The senior is also active in Kappa Delta Pi, the Religious Council, the WCA, AWC and ACBE, and is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alba Allen of route 4.
The Delphi High School juniors select One Foot In Heaven as the class play. A committee including Linda Rule Ann Johnson and Leroy Skinner chooses a three act production to be staged November 13 and 14 in the high school gym.
Camden Lutheran Church notes a date change for the penny supper to Saturday November 25. Attendees are asked to note the revised schedule and plan accordingly.
Donald Walters 27 of Delphi, employed by Carroll Telephone, suffered severe injuries Monday afternoon near Gushwa farm when a 25 foot pole fell as he removed a wire. He is in St. Elizabeth hospital Lafayette with a triple lower jaw fracture dislocated upper jaw broken ribs and a broken nose. He is married to Jean Perkins and has a young daughter.
Officers and leaders from Hi Y organizations in 10 counties meet in Delphi for a convention with more than 100 expected attendees. The theme is Faith in the Future, with a 3 30 p m start, seminars led by J Ben Duff and Clarence Cury, and a post dinner film. Local hosts include Marion Wingard Joe Weaver Richard Starkey Roddy Rodkey Jerry Hanna Richard Trent and Tom G McCormick.
Joe Holmes and Richard Brewer both from Delphi were discharged from the U S Navy after four years of service. They returned home last week to rejoin their families, with Mr and Mrs Russell Holmes and Maxine Lane Brewer awaiting them.
Sheriff Sparkey Carey investigated a Friday crash on highway 25 near Boone's Corner. George E. Hanaway of Delphi route 3 and Charles R. Tribbett of Logansport drove east when Tribbett's car blinded by oncoming headlights struck Hanaway's tractor. No injuries were reported despite extensive damage totaling about $300.
Letters of administration in the estate of William W. Cook of Cutler issued to Joseph F. Cook who qualified with an $80,000 bond. The estate totals $40,000 in personal property and $80,000 in real estate. Hanna and Hanna represent the administrator.
Bill Dern, who spent weeks visiting his father Rossie Dern, has arrived in Yokohama Japan where he serves as a civilian employee attached to the U S forces. Dern left Seattle on September 14 and arrived in Japan last week.
Homecoming events include a Friday night game between Oracle Delphi and Kirklin at the local field, a half time queen coronation, and a pep rally at the courthouse square. Six class candidates are named with the queen kept secret until half time. Delphi football dominated Greencastle 31 to 14, led by Crowder and Weaver on the ground. Hildebrandt starred on defense.
Mr and Mrs Lee B Shaeffer of Delphi announced the engagement of their daughter Clara Lou Evans to Harold Vinton Taylor son of Mr and Mrs William F Taylor of Lafayette at a dinner last Friday. The couple plan an early winter wedding at the Delphi Presbyterian church. Evans is a local high school and Home Hospital School of Nurses graduate and works in Dr Garyin's Lafayette office.

Mrs. Effie Gurl of Lafayette is confined to the home of her daughter Mrs. Howard Shaffer in Delphi with a back injury.
The Union Bank and Trust Company of Delphi will observe Monday October 13 as a legal holiday and will not be open for business.
Gilbert Bailey former editor of The Citizen returned to the United States after a three year stay in England and Europe. He is due in Delphi today to visit Myron Johnson and friends and will resume work with the New York Times on October 20. Bailey is the son of the late Mr and Mrs C A Bailey and authored Boots a Marine training story.
Over the weekend two Delphi area homes were destroyed by fire. The Harold Smith residence on North High street suffered upstairs damage and partial loss of contents while the Fred O Farrell farm home north of Delphi burned completely. Insurance covered part of the losses. Harold Smiths and Walters families seek temporary shelter with relatives and friends.
Glen and Nada Weckerly sue Florence Harris in Carroll circuit court seeking damages. A 12 jurors panel was seated Tuesday with Judge W Elwood Barce of Fowler serving as special judge and trial slated to begin Thursday.
The 4th district Indiana Industrial Educator's Association met in Delphi with Norm Ebbiie as host. Attendees from Koko mo Peru Logansport West Lafay ette Frankfort and Leiters Ford numbered about 25. Superintendent Wayne Eiikenberry welcomed the group and discussed industrial arts from an administration view. Gordon son of Shortridge High School Indianapolis and former ITEA president spoke on a Good Time. Dinner was served by the vocational home economics department before a business session and a tour of the local industrial arts shop.
The Delphi Methodist church re dedication date moves from November 9 to November 16 due to Dr Roy Sturm of New York City being unavailable. Dr and Mrs Sturm will attend a noon church dinner on November 16 to welcome the former pastor and Mrs Sturm back to Delphi.
Jim Red Abbott son of Mr and Mrs Coy Abbott of route 3 Delphi has taken a sales job with John Deere Implements through Bassett and Talbert of Delphi. He previously worked for Flora for several years.
Hugh Clifford of El Paso Texas visited Monday with cousins James Hubert and Nellette Era Ford and Mrs Mary Haugh. Clifford is son of Michel Clifford founder of the Clifford Grocery in Delphi. He left Delphi for Texas in the late 1890s.
Plans are set for a two county Democratic Rally Tuesday night at the Splii Armory. Governor Henry Schricker will speak on campaign issues with Ora Shirar as host and L Dewey Burham giving devotions. Delphi High School Odette and a Delphi Band concert will precede the program.
Total enrollment reaches 868 for the current year up 26 from last year led by 9-12 grades at 356 students up 20. Transfer students number 143 with about 24000 in tuition. Cafeteria opened serving 310 first day. Kitchen upgrades reduce staff. Don Smith runs kitchen, menus by Rob Jer ry. PTA program to improve with a parent committee. Visitation week planned for November. Pre-school census and two to three meetings planned yearly. Paul Johnson reports on Shop Work at Terre Haute.
Carroll County sent four entries to the District Rural Entertainment Festival at Jeff High School in Lafayette. Bill Kiger of White County won with a vocal solo in the curtain act. The Three J’s of Washington township took second. Jane Ann Jones of Monroe township read a piece in curtain act. A White County vocal sextet won in group act, Carroll County Rural Youth Chorus placed fourth, and Democrat Township Bureau Playlet finished fifth in group act.
Several Delphi families moved last weekend. Don Larimore and wife moved to a new home west of town on Highway 25. Harvey Harris and wife relocated to the Enid Rule property on Ohio Street. Carl Mann moved from the Rule property to a destination they recently purchased. Robert Ar e men and wife and Mrs. Lentner moved to a new home on a farm north of the George Arnold farm, north of town.
Miss Florence Brooks of South Bend is visiting Mr. and Mrs. Harry Roach.
The Delphi Lions name 73 year old Mrs Inez Clifton of Rural Route 1 Camden Indiana as Cheer Club member of the week. Widow of Bert Clifton Carroll county sheriff 1983 to 19 she suffered injuries in a July auto accident east of Flora and now uses a walker while staying with her daughter Mrs James Sink.
Tipwa Grange will provide free election day transportation and babysitting in Deer Creek and Tippecanoe townships, Carroll County, for voters on November 4. Cars will be plainly identified and no political support is expected or given. requests should call 541 to arrange service.
Nancy Ann Been eight year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Richard Been route 1 Monticello formerly Liberty township is seriously ill with bulbar polio. She is a patient in St Elizabeth hospital Lafayette. Mrs Earl Stewart of Rockfield is the paternal grandmother.
The Cutler school hosts a consignment auction and fish fry sponsored by the junior and senior classes on November 1. Auction times are 12 noon and 7 p.m. Fish and trimmings start at 12 noon and continue into the evening with door prizes at 8, 9, and 10 p.m.
The senior class presents Leave It To Grandma a three act comedy on October 21 22 at 7 pm in the Cutler gym. Cast includes Gary Lowery Arlene Plank Sharon Debay Charlotte Cassell Kenny Harshbarger Charles Webb Pat Constant Lonnie Swartz Nancy Mill Richard Spencer and Jerry Overholser. Sharon Deboy plays the grandmother.
Carroll County Rural Youth invites residents to a square dance at the Pred farm one mile east of Ockley on Saturday night to raise funds for sending the Youth chorus to the national convention in Washington in December.
The Carroll County Court House will observe Colum Day on Monday October 13 by order of the County Commissioners.
