Delphic veterans welcomed probable presidential approval of the bonus bill after a strong House passage. Men described using the funds to pay debts, buy land or homes, and boost business as the measure eyed final enactment.
The January 30 Jackson Day banquet in Indiana is expected to set attendance records with Governor McNutt delivering the principal address as part of a prominent Democratic gathering. Lieutenant Governor Clifford Townsend and Pleas Greenlee may attend, with a full decoration and ticket committee named for the event.
Indiana Democratic Editorial Association holds its annual meeting in Indianapolis at the Claypool hotel on February 14 and 15. U S Senator Alben Barkley of Kentucky will keynote the banquet, with William G Minor presiding. Governor McNutt and Indiana senators Van Nuys and Minton attend along with other dignitaries. The event features a silver loving cup for 1935 best Democratic editorial.
Alpha Rule, a Madison township farmer, argues that too much power rests with the Supreme Court. He cites Article four, section four, claiming a republic requires rule by the people through elected representatives, not nine justices with life tenure.
Bill Swickard appointed supervisor of county roads and ditches under WPA and announced foremen John Kennard John McManus John Hurley Garland McCarty Roy Richter Harry Richter and Frank Lybrook. The foremen began work January 16 under Swickard who succeeded Sam Dyer as county WPA road chief.
Miss Florence Scott county attendance officer reports the average attendance of all county schools for the first semester as 96.9 percent. The three highest ranking schools were Owasco 98.8, Burrows 98.1, and Rockfield 97.8.
Officers of the Republican Women's clubs of Carroll county and county organization will meet Saturday January 25 at the Delphi library after the booster drawing. Mrs. Hugh McCorkle of Flora will preside. Plans for the Lincoln Day banquet in February and county officers for next year will be elected.
Twenty six needy pupils in five Carroll county schools receive National Youth Administration funds to meet in school expenses. They obtain warm clothing lunches dental treatment glasses and supplies from a $62 monthly allowance. Eighteen boys and eight girls worked 596 hours for $179 last month on school projects. Participating high schools are Burlington Camden Flora Delphi and Deer Creek. Statewide NYA pupils total 4461 in 444 high schools.
Robert Tyler, 34, was taken to St Elizabeth hospital after a sled crash on Pittsburg hill. His sled hit Richard Thompson, 16, a Delphi high school student, who was walking up the hill. the impact caused a pipe to jab through Tyler's mouth and left him with a fractured nose and severe injuries near the right eye. Thompson was unharmed.
Word came Monday of the death of the infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Merton Baird of Detroit formerly of Delphi. The baby was born Sunday afternoon and died soon after. Burial was in Frankfort Indiana. Mrs Baird before marriage was Miss Bethel Brooks.
Mayor C. W. Hunter warned Delphi residents that the snow cleanup ordinance may be enforced. The city may clear walks and bill the owner on the next tax installment if sidewalks are not promptly cleaned, citing pedestrian safety concerns.
Jesse B Haslet 43 World War veteran died of pneumonia at Fitzsimmons hospital Denver Colorado. His remains will be returned to Delphi for private funeral and burial in the Masonic cemetery. He was born July 1892 in Madison township and served in World War I with the 70th Regiment coastal artillery. He is survived by daughter Marybelle Colfax Indiana sister Mrs Claude Chissom Delphi and brothers Letie F Ockley and Harry L Delphi.

At Purdue during the Corn Growers banquet John E. Snoeberger of Rockfield Carroll County won the grand championship for ten cars of Illinois Only Utility corn shown at the International Hay and Grain Show in Chicago. The Kerlin Snoeberger farm and Roy Snoeberger family have a history of success in yellow corn with multiple gold medals and state titles. Other Carroll county winners named include Ernest T. Flora and Fred C. Martin for Region honors in Yellow Dent corn.
The Flora Leadership Training School opened at Flora Methodist Church on Monday and runs for six Mondays ending February 17. Registration is fifty cents per pupil, classes start at seven. Officers include Rev. W D Archibald dean Rev H C Chapin chairman Miss Elizabeth Stephens registrar Fred Hood secretary treasurer. Four courses cover prophets messages church through the centuries ways of teaching and methods for guidance of youth groups. Forty six students registered including two from Delphi Presbyterian with more expected.
December license plate sales in Indianapolis totaled 2 745 855 dollars, up from 2 011 372 the previous December, a gain of 737 485 dollars reported by Frank Finnery, Commissioner of the Bureau of Motor Vehicles. The figures illustrate improved business conditions.
Eight neighborhood high school quintets compete in an invitational tourney at the Burlington gym starting Thursday January 23 at 7 o clock. The schedule lists matchups for Thursday Friday and Saturday with referees Dale Washburn and R G Campbell.
Severe weather forces delay of the Golden Gloves card in the local recreation room. Local boxers Jumping Jack Thompson and Bill Wildcat Wilson trained here for the Lafayette tourney. new date to be announced.
Captain William Mahanna led thirty nine guardsmen and two officers from Delphi to New Albany to reinforce the strike area in Clark and Floyd counties. Martial law restricts gatherings while about 700 troopers operate in the region after violence at Fine and Sons plants in Jeffersonville and New Albany.
Mr and Mrs Abner Bowen entertained twelve at a Sunday evening dinner in honor of Dr and Mrs Hubert Gros, recent newlyweds. The table featured white cloths, white flowers, white candies in silver holders, and a white bride’s cake. After dinner bridge, Joseph Ives won and received a guest gift.

A severe winter storm named Blizzard hit Indiana around Delphi with wind driven snow. Roads were blocked and students were held at schools while warming supplies were rushed to trapped pupils. Temperatures dropped to -15 F with a record low not seen since 1920.
The Delphi Oracle beat Rensselaer 32 to 22 extending their win streak to nine. Garver Lamb and Long led scoring as Williams faces Peru Tigers next with Long and Lamb possibly out due to strike zone illness and weather concerns.
Former Judge James P Wason was named by the court to assist the prosecutor in the prosecution of Lorain Chambers. Chambers is held for perjury connected to his December trial for auto banditry.
Funeral services for Mariene Collins aged one month daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Collins of Rockfield were held Sunday at the Christian church with burial in the local cemetery. She died after a week with pneumonia. Surviving are the parents a half sister Vena Collins Reynolds three grandparents Mr and Mrs A Thaine Fargo North Dakota and Mrs Nellie Collins Indianapolis.
