Local Legislature Targets Boards and High Salaries

The legislature attacks state boards amid criticism of high pay and payroll size at the Public Service Commission. Edward Bemis of Chicago has drawn 2750 dollars monthly for six months with 30 staff under him, while Taylor E Groninger earns 625 dollars monthly. The Senate passed Cann’s gasoline tax bill to fund highway, city, and county allocations, and new rules require standard size flags and fishing hunting permits for veterans. Four bills amended the constitution, limiting salary increases, basing apportionment every six years, adding income tax power, and allowing registrations anywhere in the state. A Lake James land gift for a state park was approved. The Senate also advanced pensions for the elderly and a measure to shrink the state board of education from 13 to 4 members.
