Monday night the City Council rejected the Wa bash Railroad request to close three street crossings Monroe Union and Indiana across its tracks. The vote ended a debate that favored the railroad for savings but opposed by residents who could not route traffic without undue inconvenience.
Father Schott, pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church, won the Gamma Gamma Nu bicycle at Old Settlers on Saturday evening. Sandy Orr, daughter of Mr and Mrs F H Orr Jr, won the Psi Iota Xi sorority bicycle.
Water will be turned off in Mortonsville and Elmwood additions and on Monroe Street from Indiana Street east to end from approximately 1 to 3 p m on Friday August 16 for necessary repairs. Clyde Spear superintendent Delphi Water Works.
The Citizen announces a one week office vacation with the next issue to publish Friday and mail on Monday or Tuesday. The office will be closed next week while the staff takes time off. The editor notes the boss initiated the break and others are not eager to leave.
County budget estimates project a total rate of 78 cents with allocations for county revenue, sinking fund, welfare, and bridge. Read in today's Citizen the 1958 net valuation of 39 million and requests for higher appropriations across offices including Clerk Auditor Treasurer Sheriff Recorder and more. The County Council will review these requests at its September meeting.
Carroll County Soil Conservation District invites residents to the Gilbert ay and Stanley Speaker farms for a wagon trail event with a noon lunch by Carroll County banks. Demonstrations include pasture renovation, pond construction, tree plantings, waterway building, and trench-silo showcases led by local and Purdue specialists.
The Thursday Night Bowling League will meet Wednesday night August 21 at 8 p m at the Bowling Alley. All members are asked to attend.
Miss Susan Johnson was the guest of honor at a surprise birthday party held Wednesday afternoon at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. Paul Johnson.
Clarence Darragh of Delphi recounts a mountain accident in the Colorado Rockies near Dillon. He was injured after a fall while descending Wilkinson Pass at 13 000 feet, walked seven hours to reach aid, and praised locals and fraternal brothers who helped arrange deferred hospitalization.
Carroll County marked its 102nd Old Settlers event with a large downtown carnival and a 200 plus reunion at City Park. Mayor Roy Clauser led a singing tribute, local officials received awards, and organizers noted long histories including 1857 courthouse cornerstone rites.
Robert Iggry Sr died in Brazil Indiana while Robert Jerry, a Delphi high school teacher, was re signed. The next morning Mrs Robert Jerry Jr delivered a daughter in a Lafayette hospital.
Jesse Homer Hicks 67 of Frankfort died Tuesday morning at home. He was father of Jesse O. Hicks of Monticello and worked at the local A and P store. Funeral services will be Thursday at Hartman funeral home with burial in Springvale cemetery Lafayette. Surviving are the widow and twelve children.
Applications for the Pittsburg school hot lunch program first cook post will be received until August 20 by Trustee Raymond Dillman.
Delphi Public Schools announced the new term with bus drivers meeting August 23 at the Monroe street building. Students may pick up books August 26 from 8 to 12 and 1 to 4 daily except Labor Day. The high school office remains open through September 3 for schedule checks and fee statements.
At the Monday meeting the Smith Construction Company of Flora was awarded a local street resurfacing contract. Paul Johnson, Delphi school board representative, announced talks with Liberty, Rock Creek, Tippecanoe and Madison townships on consolidating with Delphi. if approved, four trustees would join the Delphi school board.
Local birth notices list Teresa Marie Hawn in Rapid City with Hayes family relatives named. Delphian families include Ralph and Mrs Brown with a daughter born August 7 at St Elizabeth hospital, Charles Ayres with a daughter at St Joseph hospital Logansport, Dale Edging with a daughter August 10 at Home hospital Lafayette, Donald Rhine with a daughter August 10 at St Elizabeth hospital, Robert Zook with a daughter at Memorial hospital Logansport, Fred Hinkle with a daughter at Memorial hospital Logansport, and Lawrence Buck with a son at Memorial hospital Delphi.
Morris Skiles of Delphi announced he has purchased the late Harry E. Reed's interest in the Union Insurance Agency located in the Kroger building basement. The agency has 25 years of operation and also acts as a real estate office and handles farm loans for Prudential. Skiles has been with the agency since 1952 and plans to maintain Reed's customer service standards.
The ASC Community Election Committees of Carroll County nominate candidates for community committeemen. Ballots mailed August 31, 1957, must be returned or postmarked by September 10, 1957. Names listed by county include Adams, Burlington, Carrollton, Clay, Deer Creek, Democrat, Jackson, Jefferson, Liberty, Madison, Monroe, Rock Creek, Tippecanoe, and Washington with numerous individuals named.
A public meeting for all parents and taxpayers of Jackson Township will be held Wednesday evening August 21 at 8 PM at the Camden Community building. The proposed school consolidation will be discussed.
Shirley Ann Burwick of Burlington was granted a divorce from Delmar Gene Burwick on cruelty charges. The court awarded custody of their minor daughter and ordered Delmar to pay $20 every two weeks for child support. Watson McCormick represented the plaintiff. Hanna and Hanna represented the defendant.
Dorothy vs Reed Goslee divorce case dismissed in Carroll circuit court on motion by the plaintiff.
Public meetings in Tippecanoe and Madison townships set this week to gauge support for consolidating with Delphi schools. Madison meeting Friday August 16 at 8 p m New Hope school. Tippecanoe meeting Wednesday August 21 at 8 p m Pittsburg school. Burrows meeting held Monday with Attorney Mullin moderating and Ross Tipton present.
A dedication service for the Delphi Boy Scout cabin is planned for Sunday August 18 at 2 p.m. at the cabin at the east end of Riley Park. A three day camporee for Scout and Raider units of the Three Rivers Council precedes the service at the site.
Mike Burris, 10, son of Mr and Mrs Harry Burris of Pittsburg, was struck at 6 15 pm Tuesday by a car driven by Eddie Sales of Delphi as he darted from behind a truck while playing near the Pittsburg well. He was treated by a local physician and released. the driver was not held.
Lt. William Bradshaw, injured last week in a plane crash, is reported improving at Whiteman AFB hospital in Sedalia Missouri. Bandages have been removed from arms and legs and initial fears of third degree burns are not as serious as first believed. His parents Mr and Mrs Howard W Bradshaw traveled to Sedalia to visit him.
Keith Wertz was installed as commander at a Camden American Legion ceremony held Monday at the Camden Legion Home. A business meeting followed and plans were made to present a set of Colors to the Rockfield Boy Scout Troop on Sunday September 1 at French Post Park.
