Commissioners weigh a residents request to take over maintenance of a park owned by a private nonprofit with plans to donate it to the county. Residents of Rock Creek and Adams townships renovated the site but vandals damaged the work. The piece notes historical ties and local figures in Delphi.
Elmer S Talbert 66 of 128 West Summit Street Delphi died Wednesday morning at home after a seven month illness with leukemia. He was born September 21 1890 in Howard County and married Esther Lindley September 21 1912. Survived by widow two sons Harold and Wayne Delphi a daughter Mrs Arviila Burge Delphi three brothers Russell Greentown Herbert Rushville Arthur Whittier California two sisters Mildred Lindley Kokomo Florence Hawkins Colburn. Funeral Friday at 2 p m New London Friends church with Rev Carl Darnell and burial New London Friends cemetery.
The Carroll County Democratic Party hosted the second annual fish fry at Delphi City Park last Friday evening. Despite a brief rain shower, more than 700 people were fed, with thanks extended to attendees, committee workers, and pie and slaw donors. Notable visitors included Charles Skillen State Democratic chairman Birch Baby of Yerb Haute and party officials from Evansville, Tippecanoe, White, Newton, Porter, and Kosciusko counties.
Court records show the defendant, married to the petitioner, appeared to answer divorce charges but could not attend Wednesday morning. He allegedly was detained at an Howard County facility and asked the court not to hold him in contempt for absence.
Glen Harner of Room 231 at St. Elizabeth Hospital Lafayette Indiana is Cheer Club member of the week. Harner, an employee of Central States Gas Company, is hospitalized for observation and treatment. Friends are asked to send cards letters and small gifts during the week.
Mr. and Mrs. Tom Peters will attend the golf tournament at Tam-O-Shanter rinks in Chicago on Saturday and Sunday.
Delphi's new Boy Scout Cabin at the east end by Park will be dedicated with appropriate ceremonies on August 18. The event is announced with details to follow. An Invitational Camporee for Three Rivers Council units will be July 16–18 at the cabin site, with check-in Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. There is no registration or fee.
The famous Virginia pig from Newport News traveled with Bernard Clayton Jr. to ship MATSONIA in San Francisco and crossed oceans along with two Hawaii trips. The ham accompanied Clayton through New York, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Los Angeles, and Chicago before reaching Delphi near Lake Freeman.
Mr and Mrs Lawrence Buck of Delphi welcome a son born at Memorial hospital. Mrs Shoff of Flora and Mr Shoff of Flora have a daughter and a son born at St Elizabeth hospital. Laurel Larimore of Camden and Donald Sterrett of Delphi report daughters born at St Joseph and St Elizabeth hospitals. Gregory James Clem born in Chicago to Mr and Mrs Clem residing at 7612 York St Forrest Park. Grandparents include Lester Fife and Carl Clem. Bud Stipp and Nelson Lines noted. Carla Jean Chapman born July 29 to Mr and Mrs Wayne Chapman, with Eugene Chapman and Carl Carter as Camden grandparents. Richard Porter of Bringhurst reports a daughter at St Joseph Kokomo. Bethany Lynn Oyler born July 31 at Good Samaritan Vincennes. Russell Oyler of near Flora is paternal grandfather.
Tom Miller died Tuesday at his Venice California home after a long heart ailment. He was 69 and widower of Queen McCormick, sister-in-law to Watson and Tom McCormick. A Rushville Indiana native, he had lived in California for years. funeral rites are pending.
Lt. William H. Bradshaw of Delphi escaped serious injury in the Whiteman Air Force Base B47 crash near Knob Noster Missouri. He along with Captain Guy L. Roberts Jr. suffered third degree burns. Killed were Major William B. Bradbury and Captain Herman C. Hauser. Details of the crash were not available.
Advisory boards and trustees of Rock Creek Liberty Madison and Tippecanoe townships met with the Delphi Deer Creek Two Consolidated school board for mutual school problems and planning. Trustees present were Raymond Cowan Madison Paul Sais Liberty Arthur Hilde Rock Creek and Raymond Dillman Tippecanoe. The meeting brought out further details and a similar session held weeks ago. A follow up meeting is planned for Friday night August 23 with definite decisions expected.
The Rossville district names its six member board with Richard Andrews as president Elwood Burkle secretary Edward Thomas treasurer and Mrs James Montgomery secretary of the board. The new six grade Rossville school opens this year with enrollment for children six by December 31. Clay township pupils will attend Owasco and Pyrmont schools and the Rossville Bank named depository for district funds.
Jack Hafey of Delphi announces his daughter Bettys engagement to Orville Brown son of Mrs Malinda Brown of route 2 Delphi The wedding is set for September 8 in the local area.
Tony Berto Delphi football coach calls all boys to report at the Delphi armory on Wednesday night August 14 at 6 p m for physical exams and equipment issue. Double practice begins August 15 with morning and afternoon sessions at the football field.
Camden's Community Club sponsors an annual fish fry and street dance on Friday night August 16. Public invited with serving starting at 5 p.m.
Herb Smith a Delphi merchant photographer and amateur artist won first prize for his still life entry at the Michigantown Fair last week. More than 100 pictures were entered in the art show held in conjunction with the Fair.
A May 26 1857 ceremony described with Masonic pageantry in Delphi. The procession from Mt Olive lodge to the Old School Presbyterian Church featured band music, prayers by Rev Jas G Reed, and a cornerstone laid with Bible and American constitution artifacts. Judge Appellate oversaw the rites with master builder Woods and architect McBird. the stone bore the corn wine and oil as the crowd gathered for a formal address by Rev B F Winans and a grand public dinner at the seminary.
Max Eugene Myers a 19 year old Delphi youth received a 20000 cash settlement in Carroll circuit court Monday from the Wabash Railroad Company. His parents were awarded 2000 and agreed to repay 534.21 to the U S Government with costs charged to the railroad. The action cited injuries on August 6 and 16 1956 while employed by the railroad including a low back sprain and possible herniated disc from a fall while boarding a moving truck and injuries while unloading another. Attorneys for the railroad and plaintiff were named along with judge William B Smith. The guardian bond of 20000 was posted by Clyde Myers parent of the minor plaintiff.
Myron Neff, 14, son of Mr and Mrs Herman Neff Sr of Monroe township, won the 1957 Logansport derby defeating Dick Sherer of Monticello and Stan Evans of Flora. He set a 32.4 second time for Class A and will travel to Akron Ohio August 18 for the international finals with the E N Cole plaque, a clock radio, and an all expenses paid trip plus a three day outing. He joins brother Herman Neff Jr who won in 1956 and placed fifth in Akron.
County Auditor Hoy Musselman reports receiving 78164.31 from the second quarterly state gas tax distribution, up from 59521.15 in the same quarter last year. Delphi City Clerk Jesse Patrick received 3592.22 as Delphi’s share of the tax.
Liberty township offers consolidation with Delphi-Deer Creek schools. A public meeting to discuss possibilities and procedures will be held Monday evening August 12 at 8 p.m. in the Burrows Community Building. All residents are urged to attend and express views.
The final date for qualifications has been extended to Sunday August 18. Club members are urged to complete their qualifying rounds before that date.
Delphi High School and the class of 1932 mark their 25th reunion Sunday August 11. A basket dinner is planned at Riley Park in Delphi with invitations issued by Mrs. Woodrow Whitman.
