The Lafayette Soap Box Derby champion 15 year old Tom Miller of Flora bowed out in the third round of the 29th All-American Soap Box Derby in Akron Ohio on a Saturday. Miller defeated Bluefield West Virginia Clinton Iowa Des Moines Iowa and Lawrence Kan heat winners before losing in the final run finishing unofficially 12th place. Miller earned a wristwatch camera and a letter from President Johnson while David Krish 12 of Tacoma Washington won the top $7500 college scholarship among 251 contestants.
Members of the Pittsburg Church of the Brethren plan an annual Sunday School and church picnic at Riley Park after Sunday School on August 14. A basket dinner will be served at noon and ice cream served later in the afternoon.
Dr Charles Erbaugh a Delphi dentist remained in fair condition in the intensive care ward of Home Hospital after a stroke in his Masonic building office last Thursday evening. He has no movement in his right arm or leg and was found by his wife when he failed to return home. He was transported by Cornell ambulance to the hospital.
Eight agencies will be supported by funds raised through the United Fund Campaign this year. The agencies and requested amounts include Cancer Association 3000, Mental Health Association 2700, Red Cross 3600, Girl Scouts 3000, U S C 225, Boy Scouts 5000, Retarded Children 1000, Ministerial Association 30. The total budget with 200 for campaign expenses is 18755 and the drive will begin about October 1.
Carroll Co Sheriff Department urges farmers to cut corn and weeds at road intersections to improve sight lines and public safety.
Carroll County Treasurer and former Sheriff C L Sparkey Carey remains in St Joseph Hospital Kokomo after a heart attack two weeks ago. A no visitors sign remains on his door. Mrs Carey has been moved to Howard Community Hospital for further treatment.
The Carroll County Sesquicentennial Committee hosts a retreat and talk by Faye Wood on Historical Homes in Carroll County at the REMC Auditorium on Saturday, August 13 at 8 30 p.m. The public is invited to attend for a restful evening.
Carroll County Democratic Central Committee keeps headquarters open every evening during Old Settlers. The public can drop by in the Western Auto storefront on the southwest corner of the square to chat rest and meet the candidates.
The Tyner Shoe Store will close with a closing out sale projected to run until about October 1. Mrs Tyner led the shop for decades while husband Tyner plans to run Welcome Inn Cafeteria with son James. The business originated with A H Brewer and later Albert H Denk and Bud Darby Ownership.
The calendar lists important dates from August 29 organization day for teachers through May 26 final day of school. Key events include student enrollment August 30, classes begin August 31, holidays for legal observances, and six week periods ending October 14 December 2 January 20 April 14 and May 21 26 with vacations for Thanksgiving Christmas Easter and winter breaks.
The Historymobile or museum on wheels will travel to Carroll County on Friday August 12. It will be set up on the south side of the Court House in Delphi from 1 to 9 p.m. as part of the Indiana Sesquicentennial educational program. For details contact John Peterson in Delphi.
Esther Felthoff of Bringhurst route 1 was in a Sunday evening accident 344 miles south of Delphi on 421. She tried to pass Kenneth Clark of Indianapolis who moved around another car, forcing her off the road. She crossed the road, hit a fence, no injuries, $150 damage, investigated by Sheriff Deputy Bill Baum.
Works by Delphi Art Club members will be on display this weekend at the Welcome Inn and in downtown store windows. The exhibit honors Indiana's Sesquicentennial with historical scenes. Viewing is scheduled for Wednesday through Saturday.
A reception will be held Sunday August 14 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Carroll County Country Club honoring Wayne and the late Mrs Smith on their 50th anniversary and Bowen and Kathy Conn on their 25th anniversary. Mrs Conn is a niece of the Smiths. No invitations issued. all friends and relatives invited.
Mrs Glen Kennard Mrs Woodrow Whiteman and John Kennard attended the wedding of Sherry Lea Sheets and John Bevan in Valparaiso on Sunday. Bevan is son of Leroy Bevan and grandson of John Kennard and is a Northwestern graduate. Sheets attended Ball State University.
The Carroll County 4-H Sale at the fairgrounds drew 46 buyers with 107 steers 97 hogs and 21 lambs sold. Champions and top lots fetched prices from 42 to 140 cents per pound while the Grand Champion steer and reserve did not sell for the Indiana State Fair exhibit.
Delphi officially announces the grand opening of its first coin operated do it yourself car wash on August 12 to 14 at Highway 421 West. The Sofsora system from ALD Inc. powers the three wash stalls and optional truck bay with five minute cycles priced at twenty five cents. Customers control soap and rinse steps while optional waxers and vacuums are available. Stan Hyman Barry Emerson and Gary Shaeffer will assist.
Mr and Mrs Nathan Ray Adams of Neraux Louisiana welcomed a son named Stephan Eric born Monday night. The baby weighed seven pounds four ounces. The mother is Barbara Kenworthy, daughter of Mr and Mrs Vernon Kenworthy.
The Citizen announces a one week vacation for the staff with doors closed phones quiet and press silent on Tuesday and Wednesday. Art Bell and family plan a trip to Massachusetts to visit relatives including a 100 year old grandfather. Bob Edwards just became a father for the sixth time and will take extra time off. Rose Mary will continue news broadcasts over WSAL while others pinch hit to finish this week’s paper.
